Default Vishnu up-pipe install and review....

hey all,

last night i installed shivs new up-pipe. It took a while, but in the end it was well worth it. here is a little review.

the up-pipe;

omg. the thing is rediculously overbuilt. water cut everything, the welds are stunning (i know it is hard to use "stunning" to describe welds, but wait until you see them). basically they craftsmanship is superb. i am used to shiv and how he operates, and i would have expected nothing less. simply a very well built up-pipe.

the install;

the install was pretty tough. anyone who has changed their clutch or turbo before will have no trouble. if you havent really torn apart a turbo car, then i recommend a professional install this for you. i will be writting up the entire install step by step, so not too much detail in ths post. here is a quick overview;

1. remove downpipe
2. remove heat sheild from header (involved dremeling, or removal of o2 sensor)
3. loosen right hand header
4. completely unbolt turbo, i left the oil lines on.
5. unplug the EGT sensor.
6. lots of manipulation, but the up pipe came out up throught the engine compartment.
7. install the new uppipe
8. do everything in reverse (much faster)

that is a *brief* overview. it isnt that any one thing is very difficult, it is just there are so many things you need to be careful about. but the reward is well worth it...

one test drive later...

wow. i didnt really know what to expect performance wise from the up-pipe. well, i was pleasantly rewarded with much faster spool up, and more power throughout the rpm range. what was also very noticable, and a huge plus, is the off boost performance increased signifigantly. cool. less lag, much faster spool up, and a bit more power. for the $$, I am very very pleased. my mods are listed below if you are curious what else i have done to the car.

i talked to shiv a bit about this last night, and he also told me that my EGT's dropped as well. Imprezer's EGT's droped up to 200 degrees in certain situations. it makes sense. there is no more "heat soaker" (the cat) pre warming the car for you anymore. shiv will explain it better, but the benefits of this up-pipe are numerous.

if you have questions, please let me know. I DO NOT know the price so dont ask me how much it is. direct all those questions to shiv. but if you have questions about the uppipe. let me or shiv know. I do not work for Vishnu, or shiv, just one of the lucky bastards who lived 15 minutes from him thanks shiv!

How long did the whole install take? You are running a CEL because of your catless exhaust, right? Would running just the up-pipe cause a CEL?

Hiya guys,

Check out the Vendor forum for more info on the up-pipes.

http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthr...referrerid=607

Quick overview: Now that I know it fits well, production started this morning. Should have the first dozen or so up-pipes ready for shipping on Monday or Tuesday. Another batch to follow a couple days after that. And after that. And so on. Supply will not be a problem.

Cheers,
shiv

in order...

jmott- see shivs post.

illmatic- funny you should ask about CEL's. i have been getting them, but lately, they are going away. every now and then i will throw one, then then next time i start it up, its gone. i had one before the install, and it was there when i first started the car after the install. i drove about 15 miles, and when i started the car back up, the CEL was gone. go figure. i will keep you posted tho if i throw another.
it took about 5 hours total, w/ dinner break, and tending to a pregnant wife.
no i did not get the uppipe to get rid of the CEL. i dont care if the ar throws a CEL.

and for obvious reasons, yes I was the beta tester for the final production test. as shiv said, they are in production right now.

Cool cool cool!

To make the installation easier, I removed the engine mounts botls and jacked up the engine a tad to allow more room to wiggle the uppipes in and out.

Yeah, the EGT's will drop. I guarantee. They did on my car and now my EGT's never, eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeever go above 1550 even under the most extreme conditions.

Also, the uppipe saves you some weight over the fatty stock one.

What else, hmm, yeah, hmm, use anti-seaze (sp?) on all exhaust and turbo bolts. You will thank me for that later.

Cool

I'm not the man yet. First I want to see all these pipes going into WRX without any hitches

If all goes well with this product, I'll be offering more in the near future.

Cheers,
shiv

This sounds like a must-have mod to me.
So far my car is stock and I'll be doing my modifications one at a time with the up-pipe being the first, I think.
I'm looking for someone in the Cincinnati area who I could use to do this type of work. Anyone have any recommendations?

Bump!

Yeah, what about that stock EGT probe? Do you save it or order a new one? Isn't it welded in?

PEACE

You remove the stock from the old cat, and put it into the new up-pipe. No it is not welded in. I didn't have to remove any mounts (have air tools). It did take like 6hrs though.
