Default Hella 500s: Can I splice them to the OEM fog light wires?

Some background:

There I was, minding my own business...I was driving cross country on I-10. We were moving with traffic at about 85 mph, a strip of separated semi tire flies out from the vehicle in front of me and **WHAMM** Contact is made with my pax side fog light taking my mesh foglight cover and the integral mounting harware for the fog light with it.

So the way I see it, I have two options:
1. Find a source for a new OEM R side fog light (and a price - anybody know of a source other than the dealership?), upgrade the bulb to 55W Narva Golds, and go with a 3M protective film.
-or-
2. Spring for the Hella 500 ambers with the protective film.

Which leads me to my real question: Can I splice the Hella 500s in using the OEM wiring and OEM switch?

What say ye men?

I'd say you probably should put a relay in.

But don't the OEM fog lights already have a relay that I could use?

I have my Amber Hella 500 fogs spliced into my OEM wiring/swich and it has worked perfectly for several months now. I believe the Hella 500s use the same voltage/wattage as the stock fog lights, which is why it's okay to do this w/o relays. This is just from my own experience though, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Ah, so the OEM foglights really don't have a relay?

So when you connected the wiring, you just clipped the wiring harnesses and joined the wires together then, is that right?

I certainly hope that your method is correct, I'd like to keep this operation tidy as possible by using existing OEM installed items.

No, OEM fogs just use the switch and puny wiring. You should upgrade to a relay even if your still using everything else stock. It's fairly easy, it'll take you a half hour if you know absolutely nothing about wiring, and will yield better lighting.

A search should yield the proper how-to on using relays, if not post again and we'll find someone to post a write-up.

I'm certain I could do the wiring myself.

I just needed a push in the right direction here. I think I'm going to go with the Hellas, use their wiring and relay, and use the OEM switch.

Thanks for the advice.

Besides...

$30 + for OEM foglight (from another nasioc member?, this is a low estimate)
$24 ($12/side) for bulbs
$20 + for yellow tint
-----
$74+ for replacement
vs.
$64 for amber hellas (from your local advance auto parts). Plus you get the upgraded wiring with them.

$64 for the amber Hellas (maybe I'll just buy online)
$33 for the WRX mounting brackets (probably from an online store, dunno yet)
$23 for acrylic stone shield
-----
$120ish for the Hella package

I've got the wife talked into the Hellas anyway. From what I've seen, they're brighter than the OEM lights with the Narva Golds.

No need to change the wiring--55 watts is 55 watts which is both bulbs, stock or the 500's. Just splice into the old wiring like 90% of everyone else that has done it and you will be fine. I did it two years ago and no problems here. If you want to get technical, you could probably change your whole car's wiring and get better flow through everything, but would it be worth it? 55 watts is 55 watts. Brian
