Default HKS type-1 help

I installed my new HKS turbo timer yesterday and all the 'extra' functions work perfectly (rpm, mph, etc), but the timer itself doesn't work...

I can't figure this problem out, but I'm not sure if I understood the instructions for the 'grey' wire that is grounded to the parking brake. I connected the short length that looks like it has some kinda capacitor or something shrink-wrapped in line with it, then connected the long lead to the parking brake wire...I tried it without the short lead as well. The parking brake light goes on, so...i dont know. THe only thing I can think of is that the parking brake ground isn't correct somehow...

anyone have any ideas?
