Default Rear Fog Lamp

Hope this is in the right forum. I recently got a promotional catalogue from Japan from when the when the 02' WRX, STI, and the SPEC-C came out and while I was looking through it I noticed a picture of the right-side tail lamp. Under it, it said "rear fog lamp" in Japanese. 1) did the JDM impreza's have this on both sides or just the right? 2) Would it be easy to wire one onto my USDM 02' WRX? Where could I find out how to do it? Would I have to wire in a new bulb? I know that my friend who has a VW GTI said that his car has the spot for the rear fog lamp, but VW chose not to install one. Are Subaru's similar to this? Thanks for the help.

i belive they are talking about the middle bulb of your break light. on both sides there seems be an extra filament not hooked up on the center blub the bulb does light up but only on one filament. if you open it up the wire is straped with tape. but youll need to hook up an extra switch and wiring to lead all the way to the front so you can control it. it is on both sides.

Different countries have different requirements for a rearward facing foglamp. Iirc, in the UK version of the GC Imprezas, one of the white reverse lights is converted into a red rearward facing fog lamp. In the current GD/GG Imprezas, as well as the SG Forester, they have one of the brake lights with a dual filament configuration that is only connected to a single circuit in the US. My guess is that in some other countries, one or both of these get wired to the rear foglight wiring & switch not available in the US-bound models.

Some argue that using brake lights on both sides for rearward facing fog light can confuse others, so at least there is an argument for manufacturers not to provide the wiring for it in countries that don't require them.

Here's a link to scoobymods regarding adding rear fog lights, albeit on the GC/GF/GM Impreza platform:

Wiring diagrams (also for GC/GF/GM) can be found here:

The components used for the modification above would probably work, perhaps with some modification, for the newer Impreza models. According to the wiring diagram from ravensblade impreza, it should be connected to one side only, on the driver's side afaik.
