Angry Fed up with my Sti

Well I've had it almost one year now and I can't believe all the problems with this thing. I should have kept my RS. Problems so far: Oil temp sender needed to be replaced, coolant smell from somewhere in the engine compartment, speedo is off by 5mph, cruise control won't stay on and now a bad noise from the rear diff. The shop forman says its normal but I know it isn't, I've got 55,000 miles on it and I know what it sounded like the other 54K. And more sqeaks and rattles than I can mention. I need to keep the radio loud so the rattling glove box doesn't drive me insane. I guess I got the one bad 04 Sti. Might be time to look at an Evo.

jeez I can't believe your bringing your rant to multiple forums.

but if your just looking for feedback.

55K miles in less than a year is a lot.

Your complaints to me seem minor for a performance car that was driven that many miles over that short of time.

as you were told before, the evo isn't going to be better if you want something that is going to be 100% and still have sti matching performance you need to start looking at spending over 100k.

saying your going to teh evo for quality is laughable

that sucks but, other then the oil temp sender and coolant smell, the other things are normal...in certain situations. if the CEL is on the cruise wont work, the rear diff does make some weird noises from time to time....

it is unfortunate that this is happening, but you could always strip the car down and sell it for parts...

i'm kidding.

Sorry I'm bothering you with my complaints Oneway. But for the same amount of cash I was looking at a G35x or an A4 1.8t, no, not nearly the same performance but hopefully better quality. I've been on this forum a little longer than you and haven't seen nearly this many problems with other Sti or RS' And yes I'm upset because my 01 RS seemed to be a better quality car just not as fast. If my rear diff blows up then I guess my RS would be faster after all. BTW all these miles are highway and I've had a few other cars I did this with and fewer problems. As for the car it is all stock except the stereo and all-season tires which are the same size as the stock tires. The speedo used to be right with these tires its just in the last few weeks I noticed it was wrong when going through the "self service" radar spots that show you your speed. I then confirmed it with a GPS.

I quess I need to start making more small talk here so I can be upgraded from a "newbie".

My 05's glovebox is a bit squeaky/rattly, but I can't complain since I have kind of a lot of stuff in it, and I have pinks with hardened strut tops.

What annoys me even more is that the on/off button for the cruise control (little nubby one on the end of the stalk) rattles like nobody's business on rough highway pavement (not like cracks and ruts and stuff, but just a very coarse surface).

But I love my STI. Like, I seriously love it, coming from a 91 NSX and a 93 Civic DX Hatchback (I actually miss the hatchback more than the NSX, heh). I figure by the time it starts really feeling old, I'll just strip the interior and cage it.

If what you list is all the problems you've had with the car, you should probably be thanking your lucky stars. Keep in mind that 55k miles is like, 4-6 years for most people.

Got any metal coming out of the diff? I fragged mine at the 7000 mile mark and just got it replaced under warranty.

Too much autocross and too much judicious application of throttle will destroy any car. But damn its fun...

its a purpose built car and i would think most people would kno what they're getting into. expect the same problems from a evo. if u want comfort then get a g35 or something along that line.

I dont kno y people are bashing this thread...i take his comments like i would those in the car part review thread...its a fact that the STi is a new car, new motor, etc...truth is, no one really knows what to expect from this car...55k miles on a 1-year old car is the same as 55k miles on a 5 year old car...since many sti owners are no where near this amount of use, no one can really say if these occurances are typical or completely isolated...just my $0.02

M3 is always an option that car is luxury mix with sport like no other... god i love those cars! and its RWD

i think what i hate the most about subaru is how the dealers treat you when you need service... anther reason to get a M3 -star treatment-..

I don't understand....I think those should be easy to fix, or at least to try some things to see if you could remedy your dislikes of the vehicle..

Have tried flushing your intercoolant or pressurizing it to see if leeking? How bout tryin a nice synthetic in the tranny/rear diff (even to see if there's metal debris in there?

55K in one year? That's some crazy miles and I believe that's your problem right there.

I have a 25rs right now with 140000 miles and yeah, you also get your problems (like the dreaded blow gasket problem with EJ25 motors...damn near warped my block when I blew them)

Comon...you have an STI...stop whining about tiny problems cause I would kill to have one.

I have 30k miles on the STI
been back to the dealer 1 time.

20k on the EVO
Been back to the dealer Hmmm... 10 or so times

If you want a real rattle trap that warps front rotors, strips paint off the rear j leg, has bad strut mounts, squeaks in the interior and wastes tires in half the time of an STI by all means GET AN EVO!!!

OK already I get it, I'm a whining baby. I guess the real worry is the rear diff, with 55K on it now it'll only be a couple more weeks till the warranty expires which is why I think the service dept is blowing me off. And I'm sure that will be big bucks if I need to pay for a new one.

Hold on, before all of you continue to keep bashing, lets hit the brakes. I had an
'01 RS and I can personally attest that it was built better that the my '05 STi. The STi is still a fairly new car and only time will tell what it holds for us in the long run. I have not seen many STi's with more that 50k miles. Therefore we need to take serious his complaints. Do I expect my STi to be comfy and quiet like a Lexus, NO! Do I expect it to be atleast comparable to Econo car in fit and finish when I paid almost a luxury car price, hell yes. I didnt shell out over $30k to have a hassle on my hand. My STi has already been back to the dealer twice, but it was quickly handled and permanently fixed. My glove box does rattle, but you can always but a little bit of padding or a piece of some soft cloth like material to quiet it down. If someone has quality issues, we should take it serious and thank him for his input. We may not agree, but there is no need to flame the guy. Having some decent comfort expectations out of a sport-car is not insane. This is why Subaru and Mitsubishi have such different reputations. The little things can go a long way.

P.S. The main reason I didnt purchase an EVO, was fit & finish. Plus Mitsubishi's warranty denial record. Last but not least, the clutch needs to be replaced as much as your oil.

dealers make money honoring service claims, they're probably just afraid of working on it.
