Default UTEC + CEL flash + backfire = ?

ok, i was driving home yesterday and my brother was driving next to me. just messing around, i went WOT for first gear till 6k rpms or so.

i saw the CEL flash, and let up, but really didnt really think anything of it (happens often in 1st and 2nd up there, but not so much in higher gears)

so anyways when i got home, my brother told me that he saw me shoot a flame when i did the little burst (probably right when i saw the CEL flash and let off)

my question is- does the utec ever detect a fireball as being knock? (a little "boom" inside the exhaust might trip the sensor?) does a knock event ever cause a fireball? TIA

The UTEC usually detects "afterfire" as knock. Just turn on launch control with it set to spark cut and you will see what I mean.

CEL flash = knock or misfire....

A VTA BOV will cause a rich condition when you let off and this can ignite in the exhaust. I expect you have no cats otherwise the flame would never reach the outside world.

By the way you said that ya let off the gas because of a cel, and the concept that afterfire usually happens after ya let off the gas, I would think the afterfire has no relation to the cel.

otoh, hippy, have you ever had knock in 1 and 2 that WASN'T there in 3, 4, 5?

speaking for myself, the answer is no... lighter load means less knock for me.

He said not so much. He didn't say his car didn't knock in higher gears. Maybe he just notices it more in lower gears because he pushes his car more often in lower gears? It sounds like a real knock to me by the way he described it....

well...lets put it this way-

% i get CEL flash in 1st or 2nd >75%
% i get CEL flash in 3rd or 4th <30%
% i get CEL flash in 5th or 6th 0%

at top of 4th:
1550*F
11.1:1 AFR
18psi
16* ign adv.

...and the stock ecu NEVER detects it. (keep in mind the STi stock ecu listens for knock all the way to redline)

Yeah that seems strange. Like ride said above, usually the knock (assuming that you're getting knock and not misfire) happens in higher gears, the opposite of what you've got going on. What rpms are you getting the CEL at in 1st/2nd vs 3rd/4th? Do you know if it's misfires and/or det? Do you have your timing and fuel maps available to post?

CEL flash in 1st or 2nd rpms = 5900-6300
CEL flash in 3rd or 4th rpms = 6200-6500

happa - looking at your maps I thought you mighta' thrown in a negative number in one of your fuel cells or a positive number by accident but it's smooth. Did you tune the car? You really need to look at AFR where the CEL is happening. Is it even det as detected by UTEC? Is timing being pulled when it happens? Also, does the 2.5L typically like so little timing advance (13-15) in the 5250 to 6250 rpm points? Seems a little low for the small stock turbo (stock turbo right?).

well...go figure, the time i log for this situation, the exact OPPOSITE happens from what has been happening.

scattered knock. ive never even seen something like this in my logs ever. and i used to log on a daily basis for months. maybe its just because its super cold out (30). anyways, the stock ecu isnt seeing jack, and would be continuing on its merry way. i dont have the utec pull any timing for 1 knock event. as you can see, the timing is very low, and very smooth. the only thing you could possibly think of is hey youre maxing your MAF (maybe)...but AFRs are actually over rich since its cold out. egts maxed at 1540*F on this run.

here is a 1-2 run...without a CEL flash. lol. i was betting there would be a flash here...but no.

so yeah...these logs make more sense, but its weird because this isnt what has been happening for the past few weeks.

to answer some questions...yes, i tuned the car...knock events are being detected by the UTEC, but the stock ecu isnt picking up on them...no timing is being pulled (not with 1 event at least...because i set it up that way)...my car with this gas doesnt like much timing, and riftswrx also cannot run much timing without knocking (we think its the winter crapass gas)...and no, this isnt the stock turbo, its an SR50.

thanks for the replies so far, guys.

Ah, the SR50 would make sense out of the timing then. From your current logs in the 5500 to 6250rpm cells you've got a few options; 1.) You could add a little fuel, or 2.) take out .5 timing advance in that same area, or 3.) pull about 1psi boost and leave the timing and AFR like it is and call it a winter map. Either of those would resolve the minor knock.

On your other issue of knock in low gears and not the high ones, I wonder if what you were actually seeing was knock between shifts??

the thing is...by those logs, i feel like im running WAY too rich...and a very small amount of timing. i would hate to move even further away from MBT.

ah well, ill probably just turn the boost down above 5500rpms. boost creep should be minimal there. my map compensates for shift knock...but then again, i havent adapted it for the winter map. good point.

time to make some other minor changes and see where were at.

Water injection sure, but since you don't have it on now is the reason I mentioned the above solution. Probably just turning down the boost by a little should do it since your knock count is only 1 is the affected areas.

You could also smooth the AFR just a little too.

yeah, what kills me is how my summer tune was as smooth as butter. 10.9:1 in the middle, with a taper to 11.1:1. this winter gas/coldness (and therefore varying boost) just makes it all go to crap.

happ.. the only real way to find out if your timing changes are doing something good/bad is to try to get a road dyno set up. find a good section of road--doesn't even matter if it's flat or not, just that it's safe and repeatable--and start taking logs. the utec logs 5x a second. with rpms you can determine speed. the faster the rpms rise up, the faster the car is accelerating. afaik, this is the only real way you can start to hone in on whether your car is near MBT or miles away.

this is my plan when i start to try optimizing timing. right now i'm still tuning fuel, but i'm getting close to the end. another month and it will be right where i want it, then it's on to timing.

yeah, ive thought about getting a delta dash...which i feel would help with a lot of things...like look at my STLT fuel trims, and the road dyno feature is nice. other things have come up here and there that have prevented me to get it.

now with the accesstuner on the horizon... hopefully it gets here soon. the accesstuner pro will come with AFR variables in the fuel map. very enticing. ill probably grab one when they come out.

im pretty sure im miles away from MBT...but not by choice. chicago gas is awful.

the big thing here is the boost map. i tapered it down past 5750. this lowered redline boost from ~20psi to ~18psi. i also leaned a little bit (that was way too rich in those prev logs)...left the timing the same. oh yeah, and it was a little warmer out today (40*).

logs show a much nicer picture today-

still a little rich, but not too bad. the telling sign of big change is the change in MAFV. just barely touching 4.8. the 2psi of boost really went far there.

based off of the lines/rpm, it looks to be accellerating at the same rate as before...eh, i dont like using the utec to determine that...it seems too inaccurate.

i guess this will do for now.
