Default Info on JDM swaps?

I have been searching for info, and I am having a hard time. What are some search words I should use? I am mainly looking at my options for an engine swap, and I have enough info on a EJ20, an EJ25, and I need to learn about JDM.
The swap will be done to my 1993 Impreza with a 1.8.

Not exactly sure, but i think it is easiest to swap with the corresponding jdm sti engine for the model, i.e. Ver. 7 in an 02. I dont know what version a 93 would be but you could search for that. I believe there is a FAQ in this forum about that. I would search for the words "JDM" "Swap" "1.8" "Wire Harness" and so forth

if you can do a WRX swap, you can do a version 7, 8, or 9 swap. There are just a couple more wires for AVCS involved. I think no matter what motor you put in, if it's turbocharged the wiring will be a bitch, so you might as well get the best engine you can afford.

Options:

USDM EJ20
USDM EJ257
JDM WRX
JDM WRX STi V1 thru V8

Is your car a FWD or AWD???
Who is going to do the swap???
What kind of power are you looking to get???
5 spd or 6 spd driveline???
Budget???

These are all things you need to look into before you jump into getting a swap or even considering one.

Good luck...

My car is a AWD, 5spd.
I am looking at getting whatever power I can. (more than the 1.8, less than an STI)
I will be doing the swap. (it's okay if my car is out of commision for a month)
I will probably be sticking with a 5 speed. I really don't need a 6spd for Autocross.
Budget less than $6000. Preferably under 4k
I am also looking to stay away from full-blown wiring jobs. A handful of connectors and wires that need to be extended, sure. Tearing out the dash, ECU, and putting it all back together, probably not,..

1) Good start. You won't need to source a rear AWD subframe.
2) I'd say go USDM EJ20 swap. Not as cool in the bragging rights department as a JDM STi or USDM STI but easy to source parts and it's typically cheaper
3) 5 spd good. Might want to look into sourcing an RS tranny/rear diff if you want lower gearing for autoX. My STi driveline is 4.44 final drive like the RS and it's nice on autoX courses but not so great @ speed on the e-way. It's a trade off though...
4) You'll probably look around 3-4k for the parts and then the labour is all yours since you're going to do the swap yourself.
5) It's not like you're going to rip the entire wiring loom out of your car and replace it w/the WRX one but you should label every wire on both looms so you can match it up. This is the time intensive part of a Subaru swap. The physical swap is a matter of a few hours or a weekend BS'ing w/yer buddies eating pizza and working.

Again...good luck.
