Question UTEC damage engine? any UTEC Gurus out there

I do not know much about the UTEC however I am looking at buying a used WRX 22k miles that has been running a UTEC. I have only talked to the owner on the phone, have not seen the car yet. The owner told me the UTEC boosted his power 30-40 hp, this number semes rather high being that the UTEC was the only mod he has merformed, IE no uppipe or exaust. Which I am under the impression are almost nessary when makeing major ECU changes.

What I would like to know is what is the likeleyhood that this guy screwed something up running the UTEC and if he did what are some tell tail signs. The owner told me that he had upgraded the UTEC to version 2, again I am unfimiliar with the UTEC so i dont really know that this means. Better software or a "stage 2" stye upgrade. All my experience is with the Cob access port. Any advice or information would be helpfull. My big concern is that I will buy the car and have a tosted engine because the previous owner did not know what he was doing.

do a compression test.

bring an obd2 scanner and scan the ecu too.

ask him if he screwed with the maps at all, or if they're the base maps, or if they've been custom tuned by someone else.
