I have a valentine 1 and there are upgrades now avail that give the unit POP detection. I'm not sure if POP radar is used in our areas so i'm not sure how worth the upgrade is.
anyone know? thanks! -chris

Not that I am aware of. I don't plan on sending my V1 in anytime soon.
I don't think that POP use is actually very widespread, Valentine added it more as a marketing feature than anything else since all their competition is pushing it. |

I think in NY they use POP. My friend sold his V1 and got an escort to have that feature.

I get pop on my escort in NJ, but I have yet to see a cop using it.
pop radar cant be used to issue a ticket, police use pop radar but then have to switch it over to ka or x to target the car. So you would see a pop detection then a heavy signal from another band. Jay |

Its probably going to get more popular, but the above reasoning is why valentine has waited so long to add the feature.
you can read more about it at www.speedzones.com www.radartest.com Jay |

funny you brought this up. last weekend i hardwired my escort and i discoverd that it has pop and it was turned off by default,so i turned it on. it did go off once since then but it may have been a false alarm. it did it for a second and was followed by nothing.

Yea pop is factory defaulted off, I forgot about it I bought my x50 to take from NJ to florida. So I have yet to see a cop after pop detection.
I do get pop alerts on the parkway followed by nothing, that doesnt mean they are not using it though, it just means they didnt switch over to a different band because maybe noone was speeding at that time. I dunno. I know in florida, the x50 was picking up laser like crazy, and everytime it did there was the florida highway patrol sitting there I bought the x50 after reading speedzones and radar test, the valentine just isnt worth all the extra money IMO. I have to say though I do see cops quite often and the x50 doesnt make a sound. Dont know if they cops are taging cars but I do see alot and it doesnt go off. Jay |

same here jay with my old 8500 (now becky's) and my new x50. sometimes you pass right by cops and get nothing. other times i can track them coming down side streets in my town from over 1/4 mile away. one thing i noticed the x50 is MUCH more sensivite than the normal 8500. example. when going through toll plazas i'd get K or X radar at about 15-20 feet before entering the toll. Now its more like 75-100 feet. |

I met someone who is a Westchester county cop who say's they use POP.
So I called Valentine to discuss the upgrade and they tried to disuade me from getting it because it's usage is not wide spread. It's only $50.00. |

I know northern nj they don't use that pop and most towns in nj don't use it they rely more on the k ka and x bands. I can't say the same for ny state though...

Dont know if they cops are taging cars but I do see alot and it doesnt go off." Jay[/quote] me too, especially over the last month i have seen alot of cops camping on the side of the road and my alarm has not been going off. someone else i know noticed this too with his. i wonder if there is something new, they are just flashing it on at certain times or just not checking speeds ![]() |

maybe they are using laser, some laser systems might be trigger pull and never show up since its just a quick flash.
or they are fake radar traps, no radar just a cop sitting there because they know people slow down when they see the cruiser. the detector randomly going off is probally from some other transmitter, or a cop in a construction zone where they run the radar not for speeders but they know it sets off detectors and slows traffic. I've seen dummy cars in the median latley on the GSP. There's normally one around exit 151 and one inbetween ridgewood and the last toll in NJ. Nobody in the car but just having the crusier there will make people slow down.

I heard NYSP have a contract with the manufactures of the POP radar guns, although my cheap radar detector sometimes detects Troopers so they arn't all using it i guess.

I've noticed a sudden increase in cops with no radar, too. In one case, I could see the cop was doing paperwork -- maybe they were just told to be more visible. I've also seen one dummy car. Plus, I think they also are far more selective in their use of radar -- it seems pretty rare for me to detect a constant radar signal... it all seems to be instant-on these days. And more laser, too.
However, in one case I was traveling on the Taconic near White Plains when I saw a copy in the median. No V1 signal. A minute later I see someone getting pulled over in my rearview... way, way in the distance. I didn't get a signal, but I don't know if I was out of range, or if the guy was doing something other than speeding to get pulled over. Ted PS: Another option might be that it's a two-car speed trap. One hidden car with radar, another doing pursuit. New Hampshire is famous for that, and they're also fond of consecutive radar traps so they tag you right after you speed up. Quote:

They can still use their stopwatch to estimate your speed or the average speed of traffic and then make the decision to use laser or radar. In fact in some areas, they still use VASCAR which is a time vs distance to get speed type of calculation. VASCAR can't be beaten unless you've already seen the cop and you drastically reduce your speed.
