Question Steering column knock at low speeds

Hey Guys,

I get some pretty loud and noticeable knocking in my steering wheel/column at low speeds, especially when its colder outside. Usually happens when I'm parking, turning around, etc.

Anyone else getting this?

Mine isn't a crack. It is definitely a knocking sounds and persists throughout the turn. Its similar to a 4x4 with big knobby tyres losing traction on a tight corner but more pronounced in my car. Besides, my Michellins don't exactly have the same size tread as a 4x4 truck.

might wanna take a look at your cv joints on your front halfshafts... if I'm not mistaken once one of them is toast you get a knocking sound when you turn at lower speeds. Easiest way to tell is there will be a break in your cv boot and/or there's greasy stuff all over.

for me when I park my car and then move it a couple hours later my brakes like to stick a little bit... (prolly from the melted snow from donuts ) then I get a "clunk" and that's it.

well i knwo im getting a clunk from one of my driver side struts, mabey this is the problem you are experincing aswell, allthough mine clunks all the time at any speed in any direction wehn going over any imperfections in the road, since you car is new you should take it to the dealer and have them look at it...

Mine was super stiff too and I previousily warmed the car. I thought its suppose to be power assist steering. It felt more like manual steering. but no crack noise.

I'd second the CV joints if it's it's a click/clunk/knock that occurs when turning. The fequency of the knock will vary with speed. If you can get the car up on a chassis hoist and turn the wheel all the way to either side and rotate the wheels, you'll usually see a bit of a hop in the CV if it's pretty bad. Then it's time for a new one.

The first winter I had my car the front suspension bushings froze up alot when it was cold. It caused knocking sounds in the steering and horrible vibrations at speed.
This winter I was dreading a reoccorance but it hasn't happened. Wonder why it happened so much when the car was new????
I also had problems with the RE-92's feeling very square when it was very cold but now I'm riding on RSI's.

Maybe due to the extreme cold temps the front diff is acting like the front diff of a 4wd truck locked in low range (seeing as you liken the sound to same)? Perhaps this is related to Wombat North's question. Ah, I'm probably way off base.

OT: Wombat North, I sent you a PM.

Thanks,

Syncros

It'll definitely do it when I have it in Lock, but sometimes it'll do it when I have it in Auto.
