Default Dumb question - What is the air cleaner element?

Please excuse my noobness, but what is the air cleaner element? Is that the same as the air filter?

That's true, but air "cleaner" usually refers to the engine air filter. And, he didn't post what car he has so we don't know if it even has an optional cabin filter.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that it is an 2002 WRX sedan. I did get the optional "air filtration unit", which I guess is the cabin filter you guys are referring to.

On the My.subaru website under the 30,000 mile service, it says to replace the "air cleaner element". I just wasn't sure what this was referring to. I guess it makes sense to mean the air filter for the engines air intake.

On the other hand, you might want to think about changing the air cleaner element. You have to remove the screws holding in the glove box unit first.

I don't think there is a required schedule for that because it only affects the cabin air heating/cooling efficiency and people can take a lot more abuse than engines.

The "schedule" for the cabin air filter is "once a year." However, at $50+ a pop, I will be waiting until there's an aftermarket filter (or, I'll just be buying a furnace filter for $5, and cutting it up)!
