Default Need to change oil?

Brand new STI.
Bought it Mid Oct. 04.
Due to bad weather, work etc.
So far I only put 900+ miles on it.
I know that we need to change oil at 3000 miles. But it's going be 3 month mark soon.
Should I wait till 3000 miles or should I change it mid Jan?
Thanks.

I would go with 3 months in your case. You were driving around before the pistons rings were fully seated, so some combustion by products probably got pass the rings and into the oil. This makes the oil deteriorate even if the number of miles still low.

after your first 1000 miles of break end period
i would suggest syntethic and new filter.

thing of like this, so now that the motor is broken in do
you want what particules that might be floating around
in your motor to circulate through your motor?

old school rule..change oil after break in..
my 2 cents.

My dealer suggested an oil change at 1K. I did it. I've been following the book since then. Even if it's not a requirement, it's probably a good idea. (N00b talking here)
It's pretty cheap, I've wasted a lot more $ on sillier stuff than that.

Look at it this way - price of oil and filter $15-$20
peace of mind knowing your car is good - priceless

There are no negatives so just change it!

I recall reading someplace that SOA suggests that it'd be good to change your oil at around 1500 to get rid of "any material from break-in or left over from the machining process used to make the engine." I also recall reading that "Subaru does not use any special break in oil, so feel free to change it as early and as often as you like. The only downside is the increased cost of frequent changes." Or something to that effect.
