Exclamation Cam shaft gear removal? HELP!

Does anyone know how to remove the drivers side upper cam shaft gear without allowing the cams to move and thereby trashing my engine? How much movement is allowed without risk of danger?

Also, I have a serious problem. I removed all the nec. parts to do my timing belt and also removed my radiator to have it serviced and while puting everything back together, I found a mystery spacer that looks like it came from a pulley. I only removed the lower idler pulley and tensioner and I know it is from neither. I have no clue where this spacer goes. It is about 1/2 inch long and has a 3/8 " diameter. I hate it when this happens.

If you pull the cam cover, you can block the cam.

As to the spacer, is it from one of the accessory adjusters?

Do you mean the remove the valve cover and hold it still from the side.
Do you know if when the camshaft sprocket is pulled, will the camshaft want to move alot or do I just need to make sure I dont move it excessively?
If the cams wont just spin on me, I feel I should be ok without breaking open the valve cover to hold if from the side, but if you have done this before and feel that is the best approach let me know. I guess I am just looking for someone with some experience in the whole thing.

As far as the spacer, when you say accessory adjusters, you are talking about the adjusters for the AC, yea? I did look it over pretty good and could not tell where it might have come off. I will look again.
