Default Does the 05 STi have Daytime Running Lights?

It is listed as "Standard" on Subaru's home page, but I don't recall ever seeing them on? Was this a misprint?

Also, are there side impact air bags?

Thanks,

Steve

My headlights do not appear to be on during the day. The 05 STI does have side airbags.

The '05 STi is the only USDM Subaru that does NOT have DRL's....'cuz of the HID's

ALL USDM Subaru's have side impact airbags.

HID's require high voltage wiring whereas DRL's use low voltage. The two are not compatable. This is why in Canada where DRL's are required they do not have HID's.

why have DRLs when you can have your HIDS on all the time? On my STi the headlights are on all the time becuase when you turn off the car the lights automatically turn off.

IIRC, it is illegal to run with your headlights on during the day unless the weather condition calls for it (e.g. rain and snow, etc) in some states.

Whether the police enforces it, that's another matter.

The only disadvantage of HID's is the cost of the bulbs. Turning them on and off by using the car ignition is probably going to cause premature wear because of voltage spikes.

The 05 STis, as others have already said, do not come with drls since they have the HID headlights, the 04's did not, that's why they did have drls. Also, you don't have to have your headlights on all the time, since there's a knob on the end of the lever on the left side of the steering column to turn them off!! (I have an 05 Sti)

GM and Volkswagen cars have DRL in the US market also.

I'm not fond of my DRL's actually, does anyone know if it's a simple thing to make the WRX a non-DRL car?

Yes. Take off your glovebox and under it you'll see a big white plug with "DRL" on it. Unplug it and there you have it, no DRLs. See link for a pic.

YDRC (You Don't Recall Correctly) It is not illegal to drive around anytime with your headlights on. In fact, most motorcycles have Auto On headlights because so many states required you to ride with them on. Most insurance companies recommend you drive your car with the lights on to avoid accidents even if you don't have DRL's.

As the proud owner of 2004 WRX STi....I can confirm they *do* have HID headlights.

I actually like the way Subaru has it set up to give you the option....you just leave them on all the time if you want to have DRL. Or, if you are like me, and find that DRL are more of a hazard than a help, you can use them like regular headlights and turn them on/off manually.

Knowing how insanely bright HID's are, and how irritating and blinding it is when those Lexus SUV's get behind you with them are...I generally use the headlight tilting feature to keep them pointed down to keep from blinding others in well lit or partial daylight scenarios. Most of the time when I use my headlights, its for other people to see me rather than to improve my vision.

Weird, I remember my driving instructor and the drivers handbook says its always best to leave your headlights on. But that was in cali, so it might be different in other states.

In Finland, they proved that with headlights on during the day, it reduced the number of head-on accidents by 60 percent durling daylight hours.
It's mandatory in Finland that when the key goes to the ON position, the headlights MUST come on. If caught, it's a stupidly expensive fine - like 150 bux or so.

When I was at the 1000 Lakes in 1990, team members would "sabotage" the headlight fuse on other team members' practise cars... just to see them get a fine.

Oh, that was the same event that some privateer from South America (Uruguay, maybe) who was leading the Gp N WRC standings lost a bag full of cash at the Helsinki Airport - rumours had it over 100K in cash.

You are mistaken. It is illegal to NOT run with your headlights during periods of inclement weather.

If any driver wants to run low beams at any time, i.e. motorcycles for 20+ years, then they are encouraged to do so. Hence, Daytime Running Lights for automobiles.
