Default Of fog lights and cruise control...

Hi everyone,

I have a 97 Impreza Outback Sport. Road debris wounded one of my fog lights (smashed the lens and reflector), and I would like to get a replacement.

Surfing one vendor (Subaruparts.com) I see that a replacement unit, part #H4510FA220, costs over $200 (yikes!).

But I note that I can purchase the entire Subaru fog light accessory kit for a 1997 Impreza Outback Sport, part # 84501 (which I assume includes BOTH fog lights, bulbs, brackets and wiring) is available for only $165. Is this a cheaper way to go for the parts I need (and keeps some in reserve, too, I guess)?

If so, has anyone have any experience with Subrauparts.com?

On a different question, the cruise control will not work. The power switch works and illuminates, but the cruise control will not engage. I checked the obvious fuse, but everything was ok. Anywhere to start for troubleshooting? Wiring harness connectors, perhaps?

Thanks all!

Best,
Richard

on the cruise control, start checking connectors.

On the fogs, search through the classifieds on the forums, stuff pops up all the time.

I dont know off the top of my head which fogs the OBS has, but I would guess that your looking at 2 different items, one of the big round fog lights, and a set for the small projector headlights.

Hiya Cool,

Nah, I checked the part numbers against the model year. Both are for the OEM fog lights. One is the kit, and the other is a replacement.

Just strikes me as too weird that the replacement for one lamp is $50 more than the whole kit, which includes 2.

Thanks....

On the cruise control I ran across an earlier thread about a white plastic piece ($3) that fits near the top of the clutch pedal arm. If the piece is broken a sensor doesn't work properly--basically the cruise control thinks the clutch pedal is still pushed in and the cruise will not work.

I was having the same problem with my cruise control (2000 OBS), looked under the dash to where the pedal arm meets the sensor and found that the piece was broken on my car. The joys of plastic!

I'll second b2sotm on the clutch thing. There is a little plunger switch that lets the cruise control computer know when you've pushed the clutch in, when the plastic parts breaks, it leaves a hole, so the switch does not activate. Check it out, you'll see what we're talking about. If this is the problem, you need part number 36036AC010.

As far as the fog lights are concerned, do you have the projector type lights? If so, that would explain the cost of the replacement. The cheaper kit has only a cheezy reflector light that is really useless. You can find your original type if you search on ebay for a while. It might be that you could fix yours using parts from the similar projector fogs from a 1995-ish Legacy. The bracket and housings are different, but the glass should be the same.

Otherwise, you might be able to just get some inexpensive aftermarket fogs. Even the cheap Optilux line from Hella would perform better than the Subaru add-on kit. About $40 for a pair. You could sell your remaining good fog light on ebay and get your $40 back.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for info on the cruise control. I'll check it out.

I've got a lead on the fog light replacement. It might only be $100 for what I am looking for.

Thanks!
Rich

Rich - what kind of leads do you have on fogs if you dont mind sharing? My father needs one for the 96 Outback and one for the 00 Outback Limited.
I am trying to be a good n00b and search before posting (how I ran across this thread, BTW), but the internet sucks when the folks have dial-up and there is a bunch of junk out there.

The search continues....
thx - Justin
