Default CEL condition temporary, when will CEL go away?

For example, if you have the notorious gas cap loose CEL (check engine light), and you tighten your gas cap properly... when will the CEL go away?

According to http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/jk/020116.htm

"For example, on a specific vehicle to run the test once, the engine must be started cold, the fuel tank level must be between 24% and 75% full, the outside air temperature must be above 7 degrees, C, and the engine must be operated for several minutes. If all the conditions are met, the test runs. Pass the test three times and the light goes out."

What are the conditions for Subarus? (or if there are differences, what are the conditions for a MY02 Impreza TS)?

Turn the car on and off 3 times. If that's all it is and nothing triggers the light in the meantime, it will be off the fourth time you start the car.

According to the current issue of The End Wrench (see http://endwrench.com/images/pdfs/OBDIISumm04.pdf) a confirmation trip isn't as simple as starting your engine and turning it off... they talk about having to let the car idle for a minute, accelerate to 60 mph, decelerate to 40 with the throttle closed, drive at 40 mph, then accelerate to 60 mph again, stop the vehicle with the throttle closed, then shutdown the ECM... and that is considered one confirmation trip.

If you consider that criteria, it is entirely possible it could take a dozen real-life trips before you rack up 3 confirmation trips and thus clear your CEL. Wow. Endwrench has some great articles, check out their archives!

BTW, still sporting my CEL... but it isn't a gas cap CEL, anyways

About three regular trips including a full engine warmup is what it takes to get a CEL off if the problem it detected is no longer there. Happens on my car regularly lately and I can almost pinpoint when it will go off. Brian
