Default UTEC through USB port?

I have a laptop that has a usb port running windows XP, but when I go to the hyperterminal it only has COMM1 and COMM4 but I think my USB port is COMM5. When I got into the device manager under ports it only shows COMM1 and Printer Port. If I buy a serial to USB and install the software will it put like COMM5 or whatever into the hypterterminal so i can use UTEC through USB and scantool through serial? Thanks for any info.

USB ports and serial ports are different, and without a USB -> serial converter, you cannot use a USB port as a serial port, so you will be unable to connect to your UTEC.

you can purchase a converter at your local RadioShack for ~$30.

I use the Radio Shack USB - serial cable for my UTEC and it works fine.
I've used it to connect several laptops to several UTEC's, including the EVO UTEC's.

Works great.

To answer your question more specifically... Your USB port doesn't have a COM port associated with it now. When you install the drivers for a USB->Serial converter, it will add a virtual COM port. It may be 5, it may be 63. Whatever it is, it will become available in Hyperterminal to use to talk to the UTEC.

The RadioShack cable/software I have creates and uses a COM4 port on my HP laptop.

I use the Radio shack model as well although I've since found them cheaper at best buy. My laptop tends to decide that the USB serial is com6 but on occasion it uses a random different one, so my desktop has links to a few different hyperterminals set up with a few different com ports.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll try it on the COM4 in the hyperterminal and see if that works. I have the radioshack one but no software and all I could find online was the drivers for windows 2000 and I use XP. If anyone has drivers for XP and could shoot them over like email or something it would be greatly appreciated. I can post the model number of the converter if that will help.

you can use the windows 2000 drivers to run the RadioShack USB -> serial converter. actually, the documentation for the converter says to do this. you will have to click through a warning, though, since the drivers are not meant for windows XP.

Just some more info since I use the USB->Serial adapters EVERYday with my job (and tuning).

Belkin and Keyspan are the most reliable as far as compatibility goes. They are also the more pricey ones. The UTEC isn't picky though, and I've had cheapo converters work with it without problems.

When the driver is installed for the adapter, it registers a COM port in your device manager. Any software program on your computer can then access it like a regular com port and the converter is transparent to the software.

I notice, that windows 'remembers' which USB port you plug your adapter into, and seems to want to assign a different com port to the device if you plug it into a different USB port each time. If you plug the same adapter into the same USB port everytime you use it, Windows should remember the last used COM port# for that USB port. As long as I stay consistent on what USB port I use, the COM port# should be assigned the same number everytime it's plugged in.

If the above isn't the case with you're PC, you can usually manually set the COM port# by navigating to the COM port in device manager, and opening up the COM port, and looking at the settings. Both of my adapters have dropdown boxes that let you assign what COM port# you want to assign to it. Just remember, usually on a laptop, COM1 is used for the build in mouse/touchpad, so don't try to assign it the same COM port#.

I used the Win2K drivers as suggested and it works like a charm. I now have my serial port for my scantool....which doesn't work quite right yet but hopefully soon.
