Default 04 STi, engine turns over, no fuel pump whine before ignition

So I was driving home from work, cruising at maybe 3k rpm in 2nd gear when I lose all power. Car dies and I drift off to the shoulder. Car turns over fine, but with no ignition. No weird smells, no weird noises. The audible whine, that I can only assume is the fuel pump priming the system, is noticably ABSENT from the normal startup sequence (key in off position, key to accessory, key to on, wait for whine and *click*, turn engine over). Checked most fuses I could before the tow truck arrives. Car had a CEL but I didn't break down in front of an Autozone.

Car has 34k miles and is an autocross car. TurboXS catback with a Prodrive axleback, upgraded TMIC, running 14.7:1 in all gears, dropping to 10:1 in the base map @ WOT, oil catch can, auxillary boost controller, UTEC + tuner installed. Car was running in base map and had been in base map for some time (days).

Autocross event on Sunday (60 miles away) and the car performed flawlessly. No issues. Cars last oil change was probably 2k miles ago with Royal Purple 10w30. 30k maintenance was done 'cept for the radiator flush. Car didn't seem like it was overheating anyhow.

You can blow an engine at any RPM and I'm assuming the worst. The fact the fuel pump isn't running is a little bit of good news as I'm hoping its a dead pump or a dead controller. Anyone wanna throw in their 2 cents? Not really looking for a warranty to fix this as I doubt they'll cover anything major with the UTEC+tuner installed...but I'm not sure how the stock map could generate such a failure...

If the motor not running was because it was blown, you would still have fuel pump whine.

A blown motor will almost always run. My cyl4 had roughly 50% compression and there were zero outward signs it was blown other than the misfire codes. It even made enough power to run more 12s. (speaking of 12s )

check to see if there is even power getting back to the pump when you hit the ignition. With your hack wireing there is a great chance you blew the fuel pump fuse.

Or a pump.

Look at the fuse for the EFI and pump, any popped ? Now find the fuel pump relay and manually jump the terminals, hear the pump? If you do, then you have another problem, no pump noise, look to the pump or the wiring to the pump.

ran by the dealership this morning. with the key in the ON position, the fuel pump whine was back and the car started. the CEL is most likely due to the car running too lean the instant the fuel pump died. no engine damage is exepcted as i was at low RPM/speed when the car died.

the tech suspects it could be from the pump overheating (it WAS 103 yesterday). also said it could be a funky relay or something else with that variable fuel delivery circuitry. Either way, i think it'll be covered under warranty. I'm not sure the utec could kill a pump/relay....and it would be harder to prove that was the case as the car was in its basemap and would probably fail again in the base map. the dealership will take a look at it later on today...didn't feel comfortable driving it.

if it isn't covered under warranty, i'll just replace the relay and pick up an walbro. so far good news today.....i'm glad! :)

Default need more help

So apparently my car is having some weird issue I need help understanding. Died while cruising, not doing anything special. Car wouldn't start anymore. With the key in the ON position trying to start it, I couldn't hear a fuel pump whine anymore. Waited awhile, tried again....still no good.

So I had it towed to the dealer (still under warranty, free tow). Dealer has looked at the car and said the Manifold Pressure Sensor is dead. This of course isn't covered or even stocked by the dealer because those never go bad (?) and downpipes kill this sensor "all the time". It also doesn't explain why the fuel pump whine went away and then magically came back the next day.

Has anyone had any experience with these or could shed some light? Thanks.

Car has a full TBE with a UTEC+tuner. When the car runs at the dealership (before it dies), AF on the tuner registers >25AF.

Found it! Wire had come loose on the wiring harness. Guess which one? Signal for the MAP sensor...all is well in STi land.
