Default Fuel pump electrical problem

Alright, I'm having a problem when I turn the key to ON before I start the car, the fuel pump won't prime. Over and over, it's just not getting power. I hear the relay every time and the fuse is fine. I even tried other pumps and other assemblies. I wiggle the harness onto the pump assembly, unplug, just fool with that and then finally it primes. Sometimes it'll run for a minute and shut off again. Sometimes it'll drive completely fine. So what is it? How can I fix this?

Are you saying it works with other pumps? If so, then it is probably an internal short in the pump.

If it is intermittent with other pumps also, then check the connections for a short or a seperation. This usually happens right at the margin of the wires and a connector. Electrical is a bi&&h any way you cut it.

No, I had the same problems with other pumps. I'm thinking it's the connector too. I guess I'll take it apart and rewire it.

If this helps, I think there are three connectors in the wiring between the pump and the pump relay. Four if you count the relay connector, but likely that connector is not a problem. They are very robust. The others may have a pulled out pin or a seperated wire from a pin. Check with a meter for continuity. You can scavenge a junk yard connector and splice or buy a new connector to splice in. I like the Deutsch connectors from MSD. They cost about $20 from Jegs or elsewhere. You can assemble them with regular tools if you do it carefully. I just did this on four mangeled connectors for a new EJ257 engine replacing the EJ20G conversion now in tne L. Good luck.
