Angry A/C not working

The other day in the snow, I had my air conditioning on to help defog the inside of the windshield. When I got out to scrape the windows, I heard the main fan kick on for about a second, then stop. This kept repeating about every 20 seconds. I didn't think much of it since it was so cold out, and I also didn't think much of the fact that the windshield inside really was not defogging. Now when I press the A/C button, NOTHING happens (except the lovely little green light). No idle change, no compressor surge, no sound of clicking on, nothing. Quite frustrating with 36500 miles on the car (I would argue warranty coverage on the milage alone, but I bought it in September 01, so they would probably say I'm over due to time). Is there any kind of test I can do to narrow down the problem? Fuses, electrical, etc? Does the main fan always kick on with the A/C, which I suppose it was doing the other day before it fried for good?

Thanks,
Jeff

btw, I did search and each time I tried I got 500 hits, with little relevance.

You may have a hole in the system which caused the freon to leak out. When the pressure is low, the A/C will not kick in (there is a low-pressure sensor). There are A/C shops that can pressure test the system nice and quickly.

Default UPDATE - More info

I pressed in the shrader valve in the Low pressure line and it seemed like it had plenty of juice left. Also, here's specifically what I see going on now:

Press A/C button - sometimes A/C activates. If it does, I can feel the High pressure line get VERY hot VERY quickly. I don't know if this is normal. I've never held onto A/C lines while it's running before. Low line stays cool. In no more than 15 seconds, there is a little click, and the A/C shuts off. I swear there is a bit of an odor too. Not necessarily burning. I don't know what it is. The H line then begins to cool. If I press A/C again at this point, nothing happens, I have to wait a few minutes and it decides to start again randomly. I also checked the A/C fuse under the coin holder, and it is fine.
I am stumped!
ideas?

If it's cold enough outside the compressor won't run as a protective measure. That may be the problem, or there could really be something wrong. Unfortunately the middle of winter is not a good time to attempt to diagnose possible AC problems.

Intersting... But, in my garage at 45 degrees, it shouldn't be an issue, right? The A/C does the same thing in there.

Sigh, I just don't get it. The shop said there's nothing wrong with my A/C and it's not supposed to turn on in the winter. It doesn't seem right to me though. Even if I sit in my garage with the car running (garage door open...I'm not THAT dumb) it's like 50 in there, and I'll also turn the knob to full cold in case that matters...no A/C compressor action. It just sits there... I'm not convinced it's ok.
