What's so bad about flash? People just have to get with it. Sorry for you 56kers but welcome to the 21st century. The technology that is integrated into our cars continues to progress, and so should everything else in the world, including website technology.

Same here. No DSL. Cable is offered, but since I do not have cable (DirecTV), we'd have to pay the basic cable monthly bill, plus the cable ISP bill, plus the cable modem rental fee, and assorted taxes. All in all (I checked into this), it would cost $95/month for a freakin' internet connection!!

OK. lets say you see some text in a flash that you want to copy and paste in an email to someone? Sorry.
Or there is a picture in the flash you want to link to? Sorry. Or there is, for example, a page of specs on the flash on imprezawrx.com you wanted to link to. Sorry, can't do that. Flash totally breaks the concept of the web. It just sucks. Say no. [This message has been edited by Glenn Wallace (edited April 15, 2001).] |

Yeah, Glenn! Preach the word!
A kid at work is "updating" our corporate website to Flash, and it's just annoying me to no end. The Web should not require a plug-in. Jeff |

I'm with the Flash grouches. I like a little flash; maybe as a splash intro.
I really don't like flash navigation and REALLY don't like content presented in flash. No copy paste, no linking directly to things, sometimes the fonts and colors chosen are hard to read - defeats your browser defaults. Lastly, slower for people with analog modems and you occasionally have to download a new plug-in when the version of Flash is updated. |

Did you even read the above?!
answer me this, if ALL FLASH websites are totally useless, then why are BZproductions doing subaru's US rally team site??? Obviously, that site impressed SOA, and they decided to use them, so the use of that site was to sell work, and if they have jobs, it worked, so it can hardly be construed as totally useless, no? Face the truth Glenn, don't be ignorant you really can't dispute that. |

I agree flash sucks the way most people are using it today.
I'm a web designer/techie and have watched th web evolve since 1993 when I got on it. Flash has its place however that place is not an entire web site. It totally breaks the concept of Hyper Text and the web. If I wanted to watch commercials I would turn on the TV. I know flash 5, and have used it on a number of occasions. I once created a 40 minute long movie in flash 5 for an interactive presentation to be displayed via LCD projector for an audience of over a thousand people. Flash is great for that kind of thing, gives you much better dynamics than powerpoint. However, flash is kind of a pain in the butt to make changes to (have to re-time the voiceovers, blah blah blah extend this shorten that blah blah). For websites... I use HTML. |

THANK YOU.
The problem with the way flash is being used is because of the low barrier to entry. Any shmoe can pick up flash and do a "flash page" and call themselves a web designer, this then leaves bad impressions on people when they see poor flash, but what they are seeing isn't necessarily crappy flash, it's crappy web design, period. |

Exactly!!! The web is about content and linking, not "flashy graphics". I think it is a really crappy site - looks great, but functionally broken. All they've used it for is sliding menus and flashing graphics. I want to read CONTENT!!!! imprezawrx.com and subaru.com are great examples of flash gone wild. You can't link to anything, print anything, copy anything.... Now Acrobat Reader (PDF) is a great example of a plug-in that allows you to search, copy, print. You still can't link into it, but it is still more content friendly than flash. Glenn |

I've been a web developer for about 6 years now, and let's face it - The web is changing. I've seen some Flash websites that are just timply too damn cool not to admire them. It's not traditional web technology, and in some ways (see Glenn's comments) it's inconvenient. But if you want to make an impression Flash can be very impressive.

Being a flash/web designer, your totally missing the point.
True, flash is often MISUSED, but in no way does it suck and blow. It depends on the content of the site and how it should be presented, often times flash is better for presenting a message, almost like an animated power point presentation online. and as to not being able to copy and link to flash sites, if it's not your site, it's not your content to begin with! To understand what I'm saying, look at two sites of mine, www.imagenius.com, my company's site, and another site I did, www.toronto-subaru-club.com, you tailor the medium to fit the message, and smart web designers should know that. But in no way should you bash the technology because you either don't know how to use it or simply don't like it for your purpose. and to someone who said you shouldn't need a plugin for the web, do you think frames were around with the first browsers? or Java for that matter? New browsers don't need a plugin for flash, just like Java and frames of days gone by. Sorry to rant, but all this flash bashing of the last couple of months and "anti-flash" movements and skipintro.com and whatnot is just getting on my nerves- so in closing: 1) if you don't like it don't use it 2) flash pays MUCH better than doing sites in standard HTML, which corporate clients DO NOT want to see any more. Rich media is here to stay, so deal with it 3) hating flash for being flash is like saying hondas suck for being hondas. So please grow up. -James the flash developing a$$hole. |

Sorry guys, I didn't mean for this to get so far off topic. If you notice it's just the navigation now that is in Flash. The results pages are in HTML and you can cut and paste to email. Anyway there is not enough of the site completed to form an opinion either way.
