Default Kids today: wannabe criminal masterminds, or the offspring of idiots?

my dad's laptop got boosted from his car last night some time between 5 and 7 pm.

the car was in their driveway (admittedly and stupidly unlocked) along with 4 other cars. everyone was home. and to top it off, the front wall of my parents' house is made entirely of windows (it's a passive solar house) . . . completely clear sightlines to the driveway. so props to the perp for having gigantic, metallic balls.

oh, i forgot to mention that there's about 10 inches of snow on the ground here, which creates tracks. so when my dad discovered it missing, he followed the tracks to . . . . 3 houses down. he can't figure out if the kids thought they were being tricky by looping through the woods, or if they didn't realize that they were leaving distinct sets of tracks through untouched snow - it didn't take an upbringing in the northwest territory to figure it out. laying in the snow about 50 yards from my parents' house was the laptop bag and some of my dad's paperwork. he followed that trail of unwanted stuff and the fresh tracks to . . . the front yard of our neighbor's house.

turns out that the kid's parents asked him where he got the new IBM laptop earlier that night . . . he told them that it was a loaner from school. he's in 10th grade. they bought it. they had a hard time accepting the fact that the laptop was hot, even after the kid couldn't get past the boot password and my dad could.

they begged for him not to press charges. he did anyway.

I was expecting a response from the parents more like this:

Mom: "How dare you accuse our little Jonny of stealing your silly laptop! He got that laptop from school. Now get out of our house, before you upset my little angel!"

depends on how far it's pursued, i'd imagine. given the value of the computer, contents of the bag, and the information on the laptop could be lowballed at about $5,000 or given as much weight as a tens or maybe even hundreds of thousands . . . talk to SC-WRex about that

my parents' house is on a half-mile long cul-de-sac that only has 9 custom-built houses on it. leaving the computer in the car to begin with was an oversight, the theft was discovered when the lightbulb went off in my old man's head that he left the computer outside in subzero temperatures. but, to be fair, the house is fairly secluded and, as a rule, we never panicked if the car doors were left unlocked overnight. things change tho.

the perp neighbor's family does not want for cash, unless little johnny got into some kind of trouble with gambling (kinda common here) or drugs or he's adrenaline-deficient.

I wish I had persued the ****ers who took the back pack out of my del Sol. They got caught the kids around the corner, as it said in the paper, "going through a back pack". I missed the court date to testify against them.

Good for your dad. That kids parents should be whipped with a cat for begging your dad not to press charges. Therein lies the problem: back in the day, not only would the parents EXPECT you to press charges, it'd be a huge shame to them and that kid would get worse punishment at home. Today, parents just don't want to deal with problems. They have kids, then want them to go away when they don't live up to their expectations.

that is the LOW-crime town in NJ...a lot of people don't even lock their doors when they leave.

your dad should've took the chain saw to him. that'll scare him straight.

Parents need to be more accountable and not blame other things for their problems:

TV
Teachers
Guns
Cigarettes
Burger King
alcohol
