Ok I am just over 30k now, and I want to know what kind of fuel filter you guys used. Did you stay oem, or is there a better fuel filter out there? Also what spark plugs does everyone like? I've been looking at the NGK Iridium plugs. are they good?
Thanks, Steven

Also, please recomend fluids to me. Tranny, Diff, Oil, etc.. I dont think I need to do the brake fluid flush since I just changed all 4 corners, and fluid less than 3K miles ago. I have been using regular Din oil, but will switch to synthetic if you all thinks its necessary. I drive my car on mountain roads alot, and also hwy miles. I drive her hard sometims on those roads, and I plan on doign some auto-x's as well.
Thanks |

well this ought to be in the maintenance section, but i learned a few interesting things so here goes:
first, go get a subaru fuel filter. second, ngk is a good bet on plugs. coppers work well and are cheap but you need to change them more often. Fluids: in my trans i use redline mt-90 and in my diff redline 75w90. i came to this cunclusion with good results from redline in the past but also, cobb tuning.com has a good write up on their site on which in particular to use for your application. you sound like you'd use what i use. great results. Oil: i learned something interesting about mobil1 the other day from the porsche reps (i work at a dealership) - first, the reason it is better against heat than a dino oil - the molecules in mobil1are very very small, but more importantly all the same size. this allows it to not only flow easier through the oil passages but also allows it to soak the heat more efficiently. in contrast, a dino oil has molecules of lots of different sizes - and the largest molecules take the brunt of the heat energy. this is why the engine runs hotter, because half of the oil is taking all of the brunt. then it breaks down quicker and you change it more often. (in your turbocharged engine btw, you want an oil that resists breaking down because the last thing you want is to "coke" your oil lines and starve the turbo from oil. coking is just like building cholesteral in your arteries). all porsches have a 20K oil change interval, they all use mobil1, and they all have in the neighborhood of 10 quarts oil capasity. the new boxster has no dipstick; the computer tells you when to add oil. (interesting fact )they also told me something interesting about the Z06, which confirms the heat soak capasity theory. chebby engineers found that by equipping the LS6 with mobil1 instead of dino oil saved them $500 per car - because otherwise they would have had to add an oil cooler to keep the temps down so anyway i've been using mobil1 for years because imo it's the best of the more inexpensive synthetic fluids. it warms up quicker, cools off wuicker, distributes heat more evenly, and thus lasts alot longer than any dino oil can ever hope to. if you're in hte mountains or putting a strong load on your engine at the autox's, it's a great thing to have |
