As I said, I can't. Admin said no, and this company is very strict about installing software on work desktops, nevermind production servers.

I think he said for YOU to install screen though, not that jacktard admin who doesn't already have screen installed in the first place. So, let's recap:

1) hax0r teh r00t
2) YOU install screen now
3) send resignation letter to admin's boss from his account, then delete his account
3) ???
4) detach screens when running processes.

Uh, same passwords everywhere and they are totally anal about what software is installed. That seems about par for the course.

Maybe you can replace Tim's admin.

The good news is, it seems like we've had a pretty good rebound in the IT sector here lately.

Yep, I have been on several interviews (just last week) and they are now contacting my references and previous employers, which is a good sign. Hopefully, I should receive an offer shortly.

You can background a process by putting an & at the end of the command line. You should be able to logout at that point and the process will not receive a HUP (Hang UP) signal, hence no need for nohup. Of course, being a programmer I'm sure you are familiar with signal trapping. If you wanted to go a step further just to make sure, you could make your process ignore HUP signals.

First job rolled over and went to sleep at 2:00 am this morning. Kicked off the second about 30 mins ago without nohup and logged out. I just checked it and it's still going.
