Default Outside (Ambient) Air temp for '05 WRX

After doing many searches/reading it appears that the '05 WRX comes with an outside air temp sensor which is used for the climate control. My question is can I replace just the fuel/water temp gauge in my cluster with a gauge from either an STI or an OBS? Is the plug/harness for the temperature sensor present behind my instrument cluster to make this a plug and play operation?

I believe he is referring to the fact that the outside temp gauge is part of the water temp/fuel level gauge portion of the cluster in an STi. He doesn't want to make his water temp guage into an outside temp guage.

As for whether or not that will work, I have no idea. Probably easier to just switch to an STi cluster.

You would need to swap the entire cluster. It's not possible to swap the individual gauges, and the circuitry for the temp readout is part of the cluster circuit board.

So, if you swap your '05 WRX cluster for a '05 STi cluster, will the outside temp display work?

the temp gauge I am refering to is located underneath the front bumper behind where your front license plate would be (if you have one). I don't have a camera handy to take a pic of the unit but I know it is a temperature sensor and may also be used for the automatic climate control system. Someone once said that the water temp gauge from an outback sedan has the digital outside temp gauge in it and this gauge could be swapped for the WRX water temp gauge. That's what prompted this question....

That's a shame to have to go with an entirely new cluster in order to get a temp gauge, and then have to install the sensor and wiring as well.

What would that cost?
