Default Question about CATs and P0420 CEL

The P0420 CEL seems pretty common. In the CEL thread some people thought it could be an O2 sensor problem and not always a bad CAT.

Has P0420 ever been the result of a bad O2 sensor, or is my CAT the problem?

I've had a turboback with a hi-flow cat in the DP (on an '02 WRX) for close to 30K miles and just got this CEL. Do CATs go bad that fast?

IIRC its usually the cat error, since there is a different code for the 02 sensor

It could be a winter fuel issue. Do the 'mechanical fix' and forget about it unless you get more/different CEL's.

What is the "mechanical fix"? Does it work on rs's?
