Default Boogie Nights is an all american classic

A while back I was talking to a friend who had never seen Boogie Nights. I couldn't believe he had never seen it and he was saying he had no interest in the movie. This was based on a) it was supposedly about pr0n b) Mark Wahlberg and c) it was 3 hours long.

This is all he knew about the movie really.

So pressed with the task of explaining why it was a great movie, I came to the conclusion that it just had everything a great movie has. It seemed no matter what he was looking for, I could answer yes. He thought he had me at a gun-fight ... but yup ... there were arguably 2!

Sex
Drugs
Alcohol
Love
Drama
Action
Heartache
Comedy
Rock-n-roll (great sound track IMO)
Gunfights
Money
Good acting
Great cast
Cyclical - The whole thing ties together and does so well
Success and Failure

Car chase? I can think of one argument, but not sure if there are any legitimate car chases ... I forget.

Just a great movie.

Not sure what you're trying to say here, but I wouldn't exactly call it your typical movie to come out of Hollywood.

And our puritanical country would never allow this movie to be mainstream. I remember when it came out, it was playing at only ONE theater in Minneapolis. And Minneapolis is known for supporting the arts!

Despite nice ta-ta and na-na, I found the movie rather tedious. Seen it several times. The blame lies squarely on the subject matter. Pron stars and producers and coke ass holes are boring, stupid, tedious people. They expend so much energy trying to exude an air of glamour and success and it's all just a false front. They have nothing except money, yet they don't know what to do with it. Yick.

The art and craft of portraying that "scene" was inspired and dead-on. It was a well made movie.

I suppose they are well-made gay pron movies too.

I'll never know.

I find this attitude of mine rather odd. I consider Fight Club to be equally offensive re: content and at least equal in craft, but I really like that movie. I am confused why I would like one but not the other. The intelligence of he characters, maybe?

somebody else: wow! i'm impressed that you are able to dislike a movie and still respect it for its merit! so few people can make that distinction! i can certainly understand where you're coming from, but i disagree with one point ... it seemed to me that they were all struggling for a piece of normalcy in their lives. not easily accomplished in their world.

Examples: Julianne Moore trying to talk to her daughter, Don Cheadle (Buck) trying to get a loan at the bank ('We're sorry, we don't lend money to pornographers'), William H. Macy wanting his wife to not bang guys off set ('Honey, you're embarrassing me!') and the whole "family" With Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore, Heather Graham, and Mark Wahlberg.

Good point, Brady.

Still, intention aside, losers.
None wanted as friends.

OK, I'll take Julianne Moore.
I don't want Heather Graham ever since "Anger Management"

Not only is this movie an absolute classic...the soundtrack is one of the best I've ever heard.

And it's all music about a decade or more older than me.
