Default caution colorado tuners.

dont modify your exhaust unless your old enough not to be profiled... well unless your old enough dont do it. youll get sweated(uh oh more slang ) by the law... you cant add any type of exhaust to your car says joe law. period. now if your older than your typical ..."rickey racer" thats what the cops call import tuners. by profileing them, then you should be okay. people my age or look like my age then you might be able to get away with it. oh and if the cops having a bad day then ya get sweated too.... (more sarcasm used slang.) yeah just more bitching but hey i can. so dont modify your exhausts youll get ticketed.... damn i hate the hipocritical police here!

I didn't read nothing! I just like to click on random threads

and just to be "productive" I never thought about the profiling bit. Really wouldn't doubt it. So many people in Ft. Fun have modified cars and there are cops everywhere. Don't know how many cops I've driven by without a glance from them. Eh, different areas, different attitudes I guess.

Exclamation Video Jihad

You should keep a video camera in the car. Video tape this stuff... not sure what you can do with it, but it would be nice to document it. Possibly some news channel may be interested... who knows... just a thought.

well i have but the camera is wtih the mother inlaw . plus the dilema of hte police taking the camera and the tape and making it go south.. remember its their word against ours. the "rickey racer...." they dont profile us sure!!! why the hell do you give import drivers this damn name?? cuz they profile us.. but as i said its their word over ours... bs!!! i even put my camera in the car on a tripod.. i even taped a local cop tailgaiting and speeding.. he doesnt do it now.. i asked him to stop. no i didnt bring the tape with me but he remembered passing me and seeing the camera. if i had the tape i could see him taking it and saying i did something illlegal... i disapprove of the way the police handle themselves. there are some nice cops i have met three.... in 10 or so years living here....

I am 32 years old, have a family, pay taxes, obey the laws, etc. I am not your typical punk with a 9 inch coffee can on the back of his car.

That being said, I also feel it necessary to say that I HAVE A 3.5 INCH TIP ON MY CAR - I pass Carb noise ordinance regulations, and unless the cops have a way of measuring WOT noise from my car when I am going down the street at 60mph, I find this whole thread stupid and disturbing. I also think this probably has to do with the locality in question. It is so subjective a claim that a car is "TOO LOUD" that I cannot see how it would hold up in court.

My two closest police forces are Arapahoe County and the City of Aurora, both of which claim to enforce noise ordinances. However, I have been in several straight pipe Hondas and Volkswagens and driven right by members of both of these agencies and because I was not doing anything else wrong they left me alone.

So, I say this has to do with your road manners and how you behave on the street. After all, exhausts dont make offensive noises unless you open them up.

jama i asked the cop...in a cool calm respectfull tone...... " what is the noise db i cannot exceed or whats the max db i can have and still use my exhaust.." he said " i can see its modified thats all i need!!" then continued to say that " your pissing people off by driving a car like this!" do you think thats in his report?? do you? no i dont think so. i when beeing harrassed uh i mean pulled over roll down my widows to show the poliice theres nothing illegal inthe car. and turn the car off for them. i have my info ready for them too.

no you wont get harrassed like a person of my look or age demographic. also that 9inch coffee can ***** is the same ***** i amtalking about the cops profileing us by. i like my larry ganz pro1 its quieter than his ask him!! the police are abusing the fact that this law is soo vague and they have badges. ilike cops..that are doing there job but the police that profile get absolutly no respect from me! respect is somthing you earn. i beleive ihave presented myself to the police in a good manner so what i drive a rs that has no relavance. i as you can see jama feel very strongly about this. i would like to keep this constructive and very informative in no way do i want this to be a flame war(in case i came across that way) jama i think i saw you and your wrx at the jc sports reopening..? did i? was it the one getting the exhaust put on withit beeing silver?

Default No Flame war Necessary

Brat,

I actually agree with you on most of this, so no flame war is necessary - however I definitely fit the profile for police harassment and never seem to have these problems. I know Larry and also know how Larry drives so he is not probably a good example for this thread. You I am not sure if I know, maybe I do - I have a silver car but I put my exhaust on myself.

Anyway, there is the question of harassment and there is the question of the law. If there is a law in El Paso County (thats where you guys are right?) which states "No automobile may exceed 89dB while travelling down a publicly maintained in the County" - then they may be able to get you for something, just like you said. This is actually cut and paste from the Arapahoe County law books, where I live. Otherwise, that police officer is wrong and has nothing on you.

I definitely understand the problem and dont want it to sound like I am giving you static, but the laws are the laws. Next time you should try the videotape idea. I know its a pain, but "Its modified thats all i need" is definitely a pile of crap. I also understand that the cops in the Springs seem not to have anything to do and need to harass kids for the whole 9 inch coffee can thing.

Anyway, just for the record, Im not dissin you man, just pointing out that most cops here will leave you be if you are driving sane. Plus, I guess you are going to have to be armed with the laws and the evidence if this happens to you again. (Tapes, video, law book xerox, whatever)

Werent you the one who sent the letter to KUSA complaining about this? You should do it again if you think you are being treated unfairly, ESPECIALLY if you think sex/race/national origin is coming into play. That is not only illegal but immoral.

ihave tried that to no avail. i use my cell phone because a cop cant take the tape and make it "dissapear" because i beleive that would happen. ask larry a cop followed me after turning around and parked at the theater. he was going the opposite direction of the theater and still ended up there almost behind me.. two hours later. continued to be there ... fast and the furious patrol i dunno.... he was two spaces from were he was when we entered the theater. so he left and came back. the numbers on the car matched.. it was him still... i circled back after i left the theater. he was gone.. did his fatf shift end just then..
i am sooo paranoid around cops becuase of my runins with them and their words beeing more honest over mine.. i have nothing illegal in my car. nothing drugs or alcohol in or on my person when i drive i dont drive irresponsible around cops because they can tear my words apart and say i said or behaved some other way.... its not fun beeing me when i see a cop. no flaming man i am sorry if i came across that way seriously. discussion is what i am here for.

oK jama dont take this the wrong way
In the state of Colorado and the City of colorado springs it is unlawful to change or modify any vehicle exhaust in any way as to caust the vehicle to emit more noise than the vehicle originally emitted when the vehicle was produced by the OEM manufacturer.
PERIOD there is no DB limit just the exhaust must stay as quiet as it was when produced new
The Officer on the scene makes the decision weather the exhaust was modified or not and he/she makes the call, Right or Wrong they make the call Period end of story.

The legislature left the law open and ambiguious as a out for the Police to basiclly pull anyone over and start sniffing arround with out recource so they can pull you over for no reason at all and if necessary they can give you a ticket so as to quell any harassement suites..
This comes from a Colorado Springs police officer that stops in with his 74 yr old father now and then

The police can use this as a tool to harass anyone for any reason

not to mention the Sport Compact Car task force in colorado springs that is out to harass anyone in a "sport compact car"

Sport Compact Car task force??!?!?! You've got to be kidding me. Christ, how about a soccer-mom, cell-phone-using, SUV-driver-who-just-ran-me-off-the-road task force? I'm going to have to start carrying a big bag of rocks in my car to throw at all the idiots around here in that category.

Default BS PROFILING!

OK, so I am SOOOOOO changing my tune on this one.

Two things to relate:

First of all, I have the stock exhaust back on my car right now since I am waiting for parts.

Monday I was in Greenwood Village at a traffic light. When the light turned green, the guy in front of me sat there and looked at it. Almost when the light was turning yellow, he sees it and goes, and so did I. I crossed the intersection just as the light was flipping yellow to red, and there is the man behind me, bubblegum machine ablaze. He stops me and tells me I ran the red light, I tell him the air was on and the car didnt take off like it should, and plus I crossed the line before the light changed, and he said "thats a matter of opinion." Anyway, I did not get a ticket - I had a long conversation with the guy about police and politics and he was basically cool, but said he stopped me because my WRX has a "distinctive sporty look."

Yesterday I was in Aurora at Quincy/Parker. An RTD bus cut me off and stopped in front of me. I was going 40, so I had to swerve 2 lanes to keep from planting my WRX into his butt. Again, here comes the Arapahoe County Sherriff behind me, lights ablaze. I pull in, rather ticked off this time. He says I changed lanes too fast without a signal - I tell him there was no time to signal 'cos I didnt want to hit the bus - he takes my stuff and goes and runs me anyway. He has a partner and I call him over and start talking about this and the event yesterday as well as this discussion - I ask him if he pulled me over because my car is modified, he says no.

BUT - I am SURE that since I made certain changes to my car, I have been followed watched and pulled over by more cops than in my entire life. What a crock of BS. I did not get a ticket (perks of a being a sales guy is you keep your head under pressure, basically talked my way out of both of these) but I am sure that if I had not bent down and kissed his feet (figure of speech of course) I would have been ticketed.

Both of these events were "subjective infractions of the law" by which the officer may or may not give a ticket based on the fact that it is his word against mine as to what happenned. Either way, this blows. I have been stopped 3 times in my WRX now (since March), once which I deserved (56 in a 40 ) and twice without call IMHO. I lived in Atlanta 27 years and I was stopped ONCE the entire time I had a driver's license there, and I drove much more obvious and flashy cars than what I have now.

Braden, I hear ya, and I am sure there is something we can do about it. I seem to recall that the SEMA web page has some kind of a forum for this and maybe should be reported.

Anyway, sorry to ramble, but as you can see I am pissed off. I even considered selling the WRX yesterday afternoon I was so mad. I guess cops in Colorado just have nothing better to do but follow fast cars around and wait for them to screw up. What a waste of our tax dollars.

Default The only IDIOT is You Pal

I hate to flame back at you buddy, but the only IDIOT here is you for flaming back another member of the forum who directed none of this at you nor said anything which deserved the flaming.

I did not try to defend the fact that I went through a YELLOW light with a cop in back of me or the fact that a bus slammed on brakes on wet pavement and my ABS kicked in forcing me to go around. The cop got me for not signaling - nothing else. I was simply pointing out what Brat said about people being pulled over because of some stereotypical set of rules which the laws have set. You did not even address these issues, all you did was flame, so get outta my face with your attitude. Maybe I was wrong and deserved to get pulled over, but that is a HIGHLY SUBJECTIVE OPINION which you werent even there to witness so I dont know what you have to shout about.

If you are going to be rude and abrasive on this forum, I suggest you talk to a moderator.

Frankly

Under the guise of complaining about profiling, you complained about getting pulled over for
going 56 in a 40....
Driving faster than conditions allow and having to swerve across two lanes... (not being able to out brake a BUS)
Running lights (you said it turned red while you were in the intersection)

Your 'profile', dangerous.

I am against 'profiling' if it means pulling somebody over just because of visual traits- either car or driver. I am all for the enforcement of just laws, that is what keeps society together. I see nothing wrong will a CO cop pulling somebody over for driving a car that is making 120db v. stock 80db. The law is straight forward, don't make it louder.. It is possible to make it sound better and still be legal... I would avoid the buzz saw Honda exhausts with the big tip, just asking for trouble and they don't actually add a ton of power anyway. Cops don't like trouble makers, they are into conformity. Unless you give them a reason, they tend to leave well enough alone. So if you go speeding through town, making a lot of noise, in a slammed car, with graphics, you know what will happen...

If you are concerned about profiling, drive responsibly and modify your car sensibly.
Good luck

The problem is that we CAN'T make it sound better, because once they see it is modded, even with a quiet deep tone like Brat's car, they can ticket you if they feel like it.

The law is IMHO "unconsitutionally vague". They have no fixed standard by which to compare, except their own opinion. They need to give us a dB limit we can stay below and have exhausts certified to be Colorado legal, or agree that any CARB legal exhaust is legal in CO, or something more specific than letting any cop pull over ANY "Ricky Racer" with a modded car to look for a reason to harass them.

IMHO opinion, Brat's JC Sports intake is louder than his exhaust!!!

Man you guys REALLY got me thinking now. I have NEVER been followed or harrassed by cops anywhere I have lived. And I lived in Ames (college town) Iowa for about 5 years and EVERY time I got pulled over I DESERVED it. But to compare I would say that there were about 3 cops in Ames for every 1 here (But what do you expect from a small conservative Iowa town)

ANYWAY what got me thinking was back in Ames I drove a black 99 Prelude for about 1 1/2 semesters and only got pulled over once becuase I was being stupid . I am going to be getting a Brullen 3" Turbo back exhaust here pretty soon and the thing that I REALLY liked about the exhaust system was the look of it. HEY I have NEVER done anything to any of my cars so I have a lot of pent up ... "mods" to do [heh]. Anyway though I really liked the look of the 4" tip on the system (very tough looking; NOT tin canny/thin obnoxious looking. But I was thinking even with Brat's problems and the fact that I have never had any problems like that maybe I should go with the more stock (dual tip) looking exhaust EVEN though I don't like it nearly as much it sounds like it might save me a LOT of hassle.

I think I have only seen maybe 5 cops in town on the road when I have been driving and I havn't seen any of them give me hardly one look let alone a second look. But maybe it's just becuase my car looks so stock (except for the tint right now). I am also getting new tires/wheels next week too... which might add to my "un-conformity" (nice word eh [heh]). But I don't know now...

Uh. no. I actually complained about the running of the light and the lane change, were, if you would care to read back again, HIGHLY SUBJECTIVE OPINIONS based on the aforementioned profile you say I have which is "dangerous." I actually said I deserved the 56 in a 40. I was moving and in the intersection when the light was yellow, which is perfectly legal and I guarantee something which every single member of this forum has done one time in their driving career, so lay off the opinions that I am a "dangerous profile" driver. I was going the speed limit in the bus incident - there was water on the road from someone's sprinkler system. Too fast for conditions is once again your HIGHLY SUBJECTIVE OPINION.

The statements about legal limits to noise and modifications is absolutely right. There is a representative from Aurora named Garcia who is interested in helping pursue this. He is also the one who is trying to ban in-car hand held portable phone use, so he is obviously focused on the automotive side of things. I may actually get in touch with him and see if he is interested in presenting a more fair piece of legislature on this issue.

Hi, I'm wondering if the police consistently patrol certain areas that you frequent or not? I don't like the fact that they appear to profile, but I also wonder if you invite them to notice you by going certain places that they always seem to be, or are they just everywhere?
And those police in Greenwood Village are hardassses, my sister just got a 4 point ticket for going 7 over, pretty steep when your only 17 with a new license.
