Default why is the engine hood so damn heavy???

i figure it's at least 50-60lbs? any reason for that? i mean my integra is only 40lbs...

also wondering if all north american legacys are made in japan or in indiana usa?

All 96+ Legacy/OB are assembled in the SIA (Subaru-Isuza Automotive) plant in Lafayette, Indiana.

The hood contains a layer of depleted uranium armour (like the M1 Abrams tank) This was put in to;
1. Give the car a "superior" crash test rating
2. Defeat any anti-tank munitions shot at it.
3. Make it difficult for small weak persons to do thier own maintainence...therefore making more $$ for the dealers
4. Just because, shut up and lift the dam thing!
Seriously, the first time I opened up the bonnet of the WRX I almost ripped that thing off. It cannot weigh more than 10-15 lbs. Now we know that Soob can design & build a light hood...why not put one on the Legacy? Anyone?
TANKS!

so 96-up are us made? this means our 95 is a the real deal and made in japan?

okay i don't feel so bad anymore... i thought i was a total wuss because it's so damn heavy! i get terrified when i have my head stuffed in the engine bay and i can hear the hood prop creaking and groaning under the weight sometimes...

i know subarus are known for being solid cars, but i can't help but wonder if it's just a contributing factor to it's porky weight... carbon fiber anyone?

ben

Ben,

You can get the JDM one if your tennis elbow is stopping you from checking your oil!!

They're all aluminium here...

Well, from the C-revision BE/BH turbo on, but now they're all aluminium - time for you to upgrade m8!!

Which, btw, means mine is really heavy too!!

Cheers.

My '95 is made in Indiana. At least it has the SIA stickers in the back windows.
