Default escort 8500, laser, and WOT

about half the time I got WOT, the laser alarm goes off. Usually there's no one even around me, and I've never been pulled over (it's not a cop's laser signal). Is there a signal our car emits when going WOT?

Heard this issue before and it was in relation to the power supply cord causing the issue. Have you tried calling Escort to see what they have to say?

Sometimes my escort goes off when there is nobody around as well. Heres an interesting story though: I was about to drive really fast with some guy next to me driving really fast too and I had my radar detector on. some girls were standing in front of my car and everytime they started talking, the radar detector would go off. Hmmm... Im guessing that some radars use sound waves to detect speed of cars. If everyone knew that already... then wonderful!

But I would be interested in this situation with the laser.

wow i had the same exact problem. i dont have the 8500, instead the older 7500 that a friend gave to me. First time i plugged it in, went WOT and the thing started beeping like crazy. I got pretty scared and hit the brakes thinking a cop locked onto me at a high speed. Next time going WOT the same thing and there were obviously no cops around. I ended up just taking the thing out of my car, figured it was an older model and wouldn't be that useful anyways.

I had this same issue with mine as well. My 8500 is plug into the cigarette lighter also. What I did to resolve my problem is move my detector right next to my 5 inch tint strip and I have "NO" more WOT problems.

I called them today. They said to send it back to them. There goes two weeks without a detector. . .

She said for this they put more shielding around the laser detector itself. Weird.

I have no tint on my winshield

from what she said, and turbo said, it leads me to believe it doesn't have anything to do with the power cord, but some sort of signal the car emits at WOT.

Interesting possibility. So where exactly was your detector placed? Over the clock area or more on the driver side, and how high up on the windshield?

That's wierd that the detector needs more shielding. The only other time I've heard of this issue was with the V1, where the root cause was determined to be the power cord. That's why I was thinking along those lines. I have my 8500 mounted above my center gauge pod. It's hardwired to the car, but even when it wasn't, I never had the laser go off at WOT. If anything, the LED taillights of some SUV's set off my laser warning.

have you tried the direct plug wire? my gf's car does a laser when she hits the horn, i've heard the wire fixes it. i haven't installed it yet, too cold out.

I think its the whine of the turbo spooling up. What letter do you get? K, Ka, X??? High pitched sounds (like girls talking) can set off the detector. Ill keep it the way it is, better safe than sorry.

My old Whistler does the same thing in my WRX. In my old GL it would do it when I adjusted my mirrors. This indicates interference either thru the cord or RF.
It's weird that such a problem would occur with totally different units.

it happens on my 8500 at WOT as well.

im going to install a 100microfarad capacitor inline and from what i was told that will take care of it.

It sits pretty much on the dash, directly in the middle.

It's not one of the radar bands, it's the laser that goes off

interesting thought about the turbo whine, never thought about that one.

I'm also spectical about having more shielding being put on, that's going to dumb down the sensitivity of the laser detector.

It's just so friggin annoying, because I keep the volume set high, and the laser beep on this thing is LOUD, and when I'm going WOT i'm flying down the road and this thing starts going crazy and I slam on the brakes. . .

I'm sorry, but thats so far out of the realm of physics its funny. Perhaps there is a shielding problem or something, but sound waves are so completely unrelated to laser (EM radiation) its ridiculous.

Theres is another cause besides the turbo spool.

I came to this conclusion also this morning. Last night WOT, Laser goes off, I"m still into it at full boost and it falls silent. This morning I go WOT, laser goes off, I get off gas, and the signal is still lingering while i'm in vacuum.

I had a borrowed 8500 for awhile and it would do that all the time at WOT.

FYI, I found this thread and had been having false laser alerts on my WRX since I went to stage 2 with a Cobb DP and AP. I had been at stage 1. WOT accelerations would often cause it. I resoldered the shield inside the 8500 X50 and that seems to have fixed it!

7/1/06 update. Still works fine after having soldered the remaining crimp tabs on the shield around the laser ciruitry. That did the trick. No more false laser alerts!

My 8500 says 'laser' when I move my JDM power folding mirrors in and out. It also says 'laser' when my girlfriend honks the horn in her Aveo.

yo i have the passport sr7 with the zr3 shifter. i pick up lazer just like that sometimes with no body around either. im pretty sure its just light reflecting just right off of thge road and it thinks your being shot. it only happens like once a month for me. my brother told me about it he is intall manager for tweeter in boston mass. he said it did it to him as well. so i dont worry too much cause wether its a cop or not, my shifter jams them from getting my speed so i just keep floatin by

Since I re-soldered the factory shield joint and properly soldered the other shield joints inside the 8500, I have not had a single false laser alarm.
