Default 02-03 WRX ECU will run with what sensors minimally?

Well I am sure every RSt owner has contemplated a swap to a WRX ecu simply for the ease of reflashing and greater documentation, so I want to know what the WRX ECU will run without sensor wise....

obviously you'd have to switch over to WRX crank and cam position setups, use WRX ingition, and wire a multitude of things, but my question for you swap guys is.. what will the WRX ecu run without?

anything that doesn't require feedback I assume can be eliminated such as factory boost control, and stuff but what about EGR and related sensors? Is TPS compatible?

basically what sensors would the ECU have to see in order to just run minimally?

Todd

IAC will bee an issue as the WRX uses PWM style and RS uses a stepper motor style.

do you mind throwing constant CEL's? because things like not having the fuel tank pressure sensor (as above) will do that, but it will still run fine.

To get it to run you'l need-

Crank position
Cam position
injectors
Spark Plugs
Starter
MAF

To get it to run without throwing any cel's and running well you'll need a lot more than that. O2 sensors and stuff, but those will run it ok.

what will it need to run well, but but still with cel's? like O2 sensors will be needed to run well, but not the fuel tank pressure, etc...

you might want the Map sensor...since that controls overboost

Speed sensor
MAP
Front O2 sensor
TPS (I'm not sure if they are compatible)
Fuel pump controler will have to be wired in

I think those- along with the above list will get it running quite nicely. Lots of CEL codes, but those are just there for fun anyway. I can't say for sure that this is a complete list, but it's pretty close at the least.

It will run ok without the coolant temp sensor hooked up, but it might throw the ECU into limp mode after a while. I haven't tried it for long enough to know for sure.

ECU uses the speed sensor signal to keep track of your speed, nothing performance related (except top speed governer). If removed it will (after a few miles) put the ECU into safe mode. Safe mode you will only get 7 psi boost and the rev-limiter kicks in at ~4K. It's no fun.

ecu also limits boost in first gear via the speed sensor

speedy makes an important point
it will run w/o all the sensors
but be in limp mode which is not acceptable

I would also check to see how many plugs go into the ECM too. You may want to check that because more than likely the RS' ECM has 3 plugs and the WRX's has 5 so you will more or less be SOL.

i'm interested in using a wrx ecu (so i can use utec) on a obdI ej20g engine, in a obdI car. it will take lots of wiring but it looks like it may be possible.
so far this is the sensor list right?

Crank position
Cam position
injectors
Spark Plugs
Starter
Speed sensor
MAF
MAP
Front O2 sensor
TPS (I'm not sure if they are compatible)
Fuel pump controler will have to be wired in
knock sensor
water temp sensor

would things like a boost controller (bypassing the oem boost control system altogether) and the utec allow the speed sensor to not be used, so that i can get around the limp mode mentioned above?
