Default Swapped JDM Forester XT 2.5 Engine in WRX :)

Hey guys,

Just finished a Forrester XT 2.5 Swap into the WRX. The Forrester XT engine is virtually identical to the USDM STI engine, short of some minor variations and a cam position sensor. The car is up and running, after the engine break-in period (The motor is virtually brand new) we'll get some dyno numbers for the car.

Essentially we popped out the JDM drive-by-wire manifold, injectors, etc. and replaced with with the USDM WRX manifold, injectors, t-body, etc. The 2nd cam position sensor which is not found on the JDM motor had to be custom mounted with a CNC machined adapter piece we fabricated. The other small hangup was with the location of the radiator pipe, but that was an easy fix.

The car is running well, but we have not gotten on it yet as we're still breaking it in. At about $3200 for a practically new engine, we thought this was a great swap.

Here's some pics:

Cheers,

Gary

Just wanted to post this thread up, as we were told by a few customers of rumors that a Forrester XT engine swap was extremely difficult / next to impossible. However, we found the swap very straightforward, only difficulty was fabricating the CNC adapter (which we now have in stock BTW )

Cheers,

Gary

Hi Andrew,

Unfortunately the AVCS cannot be controlled unless we either adopted the entire STI / Forrester managment system (lots of work due to drive-by-wire!) or ran a JDM STI ECU. There's a bit more wiring work with the JDM STI ECU, but the customer was not too interested in doing this due to the additional cost. That being said, the AVCS does default into high lift mode.

Cheers,

Gary

Really?! That's amazing!

Especially since AVCS changes cam timing, not lift....

I don't quite understand why you would swap in a JDM Forester XT engine, they are almost essentially the same as the USDM XT engine, in fact, the USDM XT engine is probably more similar to the USDM STI engine than the JDM one.. was it you got the JDM one cheaper ?

Lastly, with a USDM Forester XT engine, you can use the FXT ecu or the STI ecu with it, and it can control the AVCS... I'll be putting in a STI ecu into my FXT soon once I put the vf39, sti tmic and catless up-pipe on..

I guess they could have gone a STi shortblock as well.
But 3.2k for the short block and heads is a good deal.

The engine is a USDM Forester XT, we switched the intake manifold so we could swap it into a WRX without having to convert to DBW (Pedal box and TPS) and change any of the wiring or ECU.

The main part of swapping a Forester XT motor into a WRX is the switching of the Cam sensor and the need to fabricate a bracket to do this, the rest is pretty much inline with a standard shortblock install.

The car runs fine without AVCS connected but we can connect the AVCS by switching out the Solinoids for JDM counter parts and using a JDM STI ECU, wiring is already in place on this car to facilitate this at a later date.

Hope you have an 04FXT--this swap is a no-go for immobizer'ed 05's.
