I was just curious what made people in this forum upgrade their cars with USDM STi2.5 motors or JDM 2.0 motors (specifically the v7 and v8). What would make someone favor one choice over the other? Is it just whichever you get cheaper? I am contemplating upgrading my WRX wagon for more power at some point but also one something that works well as a complete package.

You would be happy with both. I say get the one you can get the better deal on.

I would imagine the USDM swap would be harder because of the wireless throttle, and perhaps the ECU just not being plug and play. Plus, JDM engines are more powerful right off the bat.

both are great...I would go with the EJ257 for the torque, so long as the drivetrain can handel it...otherwise get the top end of the EJ207 with forged pistons.

Hmm.. so the throttle and ECU are easier to wire up for a JDM into a WRX? That would be a major consideration. I figure either would have more torque than I have now with the AVCS and all. As for drivetrain, I have a 5MT with RA gears.

why forged pistons with the 207 and not the 257?
i blew my 20g now have a ej257 with interals.. i am selling off the internals and i might sell off the 257 and get a 207... who knows. and i dont know why.. |

Im lost...I have been going through the various threads about this and that swap.
I want an all out street machine that can really move from the line. I'm thinking of ver8 spec C and 6spd tranny in a '02 WRX. Since its twin scroll ( I belive only the ver8 are) it will have great low end. Is the top end loss that bad in comparsion to a bigger turbo on a stock 02 WRX engine? Can you not upgrade the turbo like most other Subie cars, er WRX? -or- Would running a 2.5 with a bigger turbo and 6spd give me the best of both worlds, stong low end and top end. As you can see I want to be fast of the line AND have the ablity to go all out. If I had to pick one, I perfer off the line speed over top end... I just dont like waiting for the turbo to spool up. Out of the two (twin scroll, or 2.5) engines which would get me going the quickest/strongest? I know it will depend on the turbo, but in general. Bigger displacment can add faster spool, I believe? However between a ver8 and a 2.5, I dont know, or maybe understand which would out do the other... PS: Whats the ver9 engine all about? Twin scroll as well?? Not much is known about the ver.9s yet. I belive it is a twin scroll. either option is a good way to go... neither is realy that much better then the other. The 2.5 is a nice puller and the 2.0 is a high flyer. Realy do more research before you spend any money... months worth of it. |

I dont plan on doing anything until late spring, so thats why I've started lurking around here...
"High Flyer" meaning, revs? So, its takes the high revs to get the pull, whereas the 2.5 has the pull without the need for high revs? Ver8 Spec C much better than ver8? Does anyone have info on the ver9? Thanks for the help, totoherbs |

Ya, revs. Its all in the way you drive and what you like... The spec C has a different turbo and some head parts; depending on what you want it may or maynot be worth it to spend the extra money on it.

For high power, 2.0 > 2.5 That said, it still comes down to preference of driving style, because at the power levels where the 2.0 makes more power than the 2.5, you're already in ludicrous mode. I prefer the 2.0 <--------- |

I noticed! but read that you looking for more...
I just want to put the pedal down at ANYTIME and move. Not wait forever for full boost, nor always downshifting to stay in my powerband. I like to feel the pull right from start to end... |

Twinscroll will more likely cost you a good deal more then a 2.5 block.

yeah, twinscroll isn't really "all that." In terms of instantaneous response, there is no replacement for displacement.

The reason why I was leaning towards a twin scroll setup, is because I just always thought it to be SIMILAR (in a way) to a twin turbo. I guess I can laugh at myself for that...
Twin Scroll comes with a vf37 or 36, how is the lag compared to a TD04 on a stock wrx, or a vf34 (cobb 2.5) setup? |
