Default Oil catch pan

What is the best oil catch pan available? The one I currently use stores about 6 quarts or so but leaks at the spout even though it isn't suppose to. I am sick of it leaking and am looking for a new one. I checked the place where I normally purchase these type of products from but they don't make one. What would the NASIOC experts suggest?

I was also wondering, on a side note, what the extra crush washer is for when you change you oil? I figured it was for the oil pan bolt but I don't see any old washer to remove and replace with the new one or does the crush washer go on the bolt anyway and then tightened to the proper torque?

My last oil change didn't go well. I was sent the wrong oil filter and stupid me didn't check even though I felt as though it was wrong. Anyway, when I was finished I started my car and the oil filter shot off and oil sprayed all over what looks like an exhaust pipe near where the oil filter is located. It has a shield covering most of the pipe and the oil, I think, collected in there. I can still smell a small amount of buring but not as much as it used to be. Did I hurt anything as a result of this?

For the crush washer, see if there's already one on the drain plug that may have been "painted on". Otherwise put the new washer on, flat side away from the oilpan, and torque to 32.5 ft/lbs i believe. And try to get a new washer everytime you change your oil. Since they only cost $.30-40 it's not going to cost much.

As for the crush washer, do what psydotek said about the original one being painted on. The stock washer from the factory usually has a coat of paint on it, and is hard to distinguish from the bolt head. Also, you could do what alot of us members have done and install a Fumoto valve. Go to http://www.fumotovalve.com/

I got my drain pan from walmart. It holds 11 quarts, is round with a handles on 3 sides and a spout on the other and a vent on the top at the edge so it dont gurgle while it is filling with oil. Have been using it for probably 10 years now with no leaks. Just about all auto parts stores carry them also.

As for cleaning the oil out of the heat shield, you could use carb cleaner in spray cans to remove the excess oil. Carb cleaner will evaporate quite quickly and disperse the oil in the heat shield and comes with a tube that fits on the nozzle so you will be able to spray it between the manifold and the shield. The heat shield you are referring to is probably the one over the exhaust manifold which would get pretty hot and could cause a fire if alot of oil is caught in it. I'm sure someone will probably come up with a better solution for removing the oil trapped in there, but this is all I can think of right now.
