Default How to identify 2003 wrx engine

I am buying a wrx motor from someone who claims that it is from a 2003. It came out of a '97 impreza. Does anyone know what identifying marks I can look for to verify that fact?

Thanks,
Bryan

The radiator fill can would be silver on the 03's. The 02's are black. It's located above the intake manifold on the left side. There was a recall shortly ofter to change it to silver because the black paint was chipping off into the coolant system. ( Idiots!... )

EJ205xx4xx. What part of this says it is a 2003 wrx engine? I curious myself. The engine I bought shows EJ205xx3xx. The engine I bought was advertised as a 2003.............

oh, sorry, i just remember it as the model year being one less than the number in the engine code. I was told this by kingpin, and crossreferenced it with my friends cars, 02 wrx and 04 STi. also i believe rallispec has a list of various engine codes and it works out too.

also, greenmac, it is possible your car is an 03 with a 3, it may have been an early batch, i think to verify that you need to know its actually production date.
