Default STI wing vs. WRX wing... help me deal with my dad

Alright so I bought, yes me, my money, bought a 2005 2.5rs CGM.. I found somebody pretty close who wants to swap trunks, i currently have a WRX wing, and I will be trading for the STI wing.

Now, my dad is pretty open minded, but hates the STI wing, and if giving me this lame ass excuse saying I cant trade unless I get proof that putting that wing on my car wont depreciate the value.... I dont understand what his deal is really... Somebody give me words of advise so I can convince him hes just being old .

edit: sorry I guess i should mention, the reason he has a say at all is because he co-signed for me and pays my insurance.

Show him prices for STi Spoilers on websites and that should quickly quiet him.

If he pays your insurance then he has a vested interest since the wing will attract more attention from theives and police than a plain trunk. But, since his only criteria is depreciation, I think you'll have a hard time proving either way how the wing will affect the value of your car.

<stinazi>How can you put the wing on your car without the hood scoop?!? Dood - that will look so WRONG. The car will look like it wants to pop a wheelie or something without the ginormous scoop to offset it. DON'T DO IT!!!! </stinazi>

Well, any modification results in quicker depreciation. its a given. But, when you sell the car, you can do another trunk swap and bring it right back to stock.

STi on an RS? I wouldn't even put it on my WRX -- on the STi it is there for a purpose, on any other model it is purely rice.

I'd say that mcowger's answer is the one that should make your dad more accepting of your plan. You'll have no problems finding someone to swap trunks with again once it's time to get rid of the car. You're only issue may be the condition of the wing/trunk. Just take care of the paint and you shouldn't have any problems. Value wouldn't be affected one way or the other if you have the ability to go back to stock.

At least vision out the rear window will be better than on my STi.

Seriously though....the STi trunk lid and wing are about twice the cost of the WRX trunk lid and spoiler.

If you are making an even trade, you are coming out ahead. Hell, you could do the trade and sell the STi wing/trunk, purchase a new WRX trunk/spoiler and probably make money on the deal.

Well, rice burning is ok I guess, my best friends all drive hondas, includeing a custom painted dark blue integra with the loudest exhaust you have ever heard....

.. but as far as an STI wing being on a wrx and calling it rice... hmm. my friend carl has a white 03 wrx with over 300whp, and you are calling that rice?

performance != rice.

you can't necessarily obviously see 300hp.

when changing the image of a car, that's when you risk the rice look.

Ha your dad is just the opposite of mine. I'm trying to get rid of the STI spoiler on my wrx but my dad wants to keep it on there, even though people offered $200 for it. But I can't complain too much because I didn't pay for it.

the whole "rice, not rice" thing is so overplayed.

I traded wings with an STI owner. Why? He wanted the sleeper look, and I HATED the way the stock WRX spoiler looked. I Like the STI one alot more. I have nor will I ever have the intention of making people think I have an STI, unless I put an STI motor in it. plain and simple. Behind one person saying it is rice, is always someone who pays their own car payments, and for all their mods.

Don't listen to the naysayers. Do what makes YOU happy.

I see nothing wrong with putting an Sti spoiler on a WRX. Spoilers like that are modeled after their rally brethren and let's not forget what WRX stands for and where it came from. Pay no attention to the Sti snobs in that regard. I'm forced to agree though, an Sti spoiler on an RS is big time rice. If you put one like that on your car, the car better have the balls to justify it. It's there for high speed downforce. If you can't achieve high speed, you don't need it and you're asking to be made fun of. As for your dad, if you ever have to sell the car, changing spoilers and/or trunks is almost a nonissue. Switch them out and PRESTO! no depreciation, even if there was any to begin with. Do what you want, my 2 cents.

I would have to agree with your dad on this - I think putting an STI wing on a 2.5RS will turn a lot of folks off to the car, and as a result, depreciate it in value. You have to remember that most all of the folks who will be looking to buy your car when you sell it won't be Suby enthusiasts or members of this forum, and will look at that huge wing as overkill. It fits the STI, but is too much on a WRX or 2.5RS, in my humble opinion.

That said - do you plan on owning it for awhile? Then who cares - make it how you want it. You can worry about getting a replacement trunk when that day comes, years from now.

tell your dad that "BIG" wing creates "BIG" drag to your car, and it reduces top speed of your car by a certain amount.... so you wont hit ur true top speed.. and you can tell your dad you can drive slower on the road

and for the ".. to rice or not to rice.." question... its his car.. he can do whatever he likes (eg. put real rice grains in ur car )... if u'd like your car looks like that.. go for it

Wow.. that's a bunch of crap..

So basically what most of you "THAT'S RICE!!" guys are saying is that anything that isn't 100% performance-oriented is rice? That's what it sounds like If that was true you could throw out a million and one things about great cars that are purely cosmetic and call them rice. Unbelievable, some people are so f*ing arrogant about issues like this "Ugh, you're a poseur, ugh, that's ricey." Good job! I hope you've accomplished at least one thing in your life, because an open mind is not one of them!!

So what you need to say to your dad is

"Hey! You know, the WRX wing is bogus. But if I get an STi wing which accents the car most non-heinously and will add some cool looks, pronto, I'll just be driving a bogus car too." Yeah?
