Default strut leaking?

I went and got my NYS inspection done today - and the guy said that my right fr strut is leaking...jus gr8!! The car only has 40K miles...is that the usual life expectancy for a strut? Will the warranty cover that - I doubt it..
Sorry - just venting

If you haven't done any suspension mods (springs, sways, etc), you might get warranty coverage.

How much performance loss are you willing to live with? When the oil gets below a certain level it will no longer offer resistance proportional to the rate it is compressed - no damping. When it is dry of oil and there is no lubrication in the strut it will wear rapidly and make noise on compression/rebound. If you can live with this noise long enough it will fail and the wheel will be flopping around in the wheel well. I've driven leaking struts around several years.

Get yourself a $19 spring compressor at Harbor freight and change them.

Verify they are bad first, did you look at them?
