Never heard of this model. The funny thing is, it has California plates in all the pictures... Could this be good news for perspecitve Forester owners? I also see it has the EJ20, but never read the word turbo. Damn Japanese site.

hehe... in Japan there are Foresters with EJ20, with EJ20 Tubo, EJ25, and STi...

Never mind the California plate, Japanese like to use foreign plates in their ads...

Just my opinion, but....

Looks to me like a scaled down STi model without the STi performance. You know, for people without the bucks who wnat the looks without the kicks. No turbo, no hi-po suspension, but the stance, the ground effects, and all the convenience options (including the 7-disk changer). Even the engine is different. It is tuned "lean-burn" like a Honda so that it can get better fuel economy.

Also, I noticed the manual comes with a dual range (read: LOW RANGE) transfer case. Must make it pretty capable off-road. Much like the old GL wagons and the BRATS.

Not too bad looking, but I'd rather have the STi ST/b type A myself...

The S/20 Type A is just the basic JDM 2.0L N/A Forester with a 7-Disc CD changer, STi body kit and tinted windows. Lots of Japanese ads like to show their products being "used" in the US (looks cool to them). California has particular attraction for the lifestyle. Check out all the other Forester photos -- many have fake CA lisence plates.

Many 2.0L Subarus (Japan, UK, Australia) get the low range gearing in the manual trannies. It's there to help compensate for the lower torque rating of the engine -- not necessarily to make them more off-road capable. The auto trannies don't get it, however.
