Default Wife got a ticket...can it be talked down in court?

She got a ticket for 53 in a 40, and the court said it would be 188.90. That seems pretty high for a speeding ticket.

If she goes to court, would it possibly be reduced? Is there a way to get it reduced?

Get one of those $70 ticket clinic lawyers if they have them in your state. Garanteed(sp)
no points/school/etc. Only court costs sometimes.

She has nothing to lose by pleading not guilty, and it will most likely be reduced to no points, or less points, and perhaps a different fine.

Problem is she is guilty...she knows she was speeding, and she's not going to lie in court.

Arg...I've answered this question soooo many times.

1. Plead not guilty
2. Show up to court 20mins early
3. Find cop who ticketed you
4. Plea with him and say "Hello Officer XXXXX, I'm sorry for having to drag you in here but is there ANYTHING you can do to help me out? I never get tickets and I really cant afford to have this go on my record. I will never do this again and its something that I've never done in the past. I'd appriciate anything you can do"

Long silence along with "sigh" from cop

Then he'll take the ticket from you, look it over, walk over to the judge, tell judge what he wants to do, then the judge will re-issue the ticket with lesser amount and no points. Cop will walk over hand you the revised ticket and the judge *may* say "I better not catch you in here again"

Thank cop and I mean THANK HIM (just dont go to shake his hand, they hate that)

Then take ticket to counter, pay it off, go on your way.

so....can we make this a sticky?

Dude, it doesnt matter.

I've gotten 3 tickets WITH points only to fight them to make the "no point" tickets and a good $100 off each one.

The worst one was where I was doing 85 in a 55. Cop wrote ticket for 70 in a 55 with 2 points and said he was helping me out...well guess what??? I still fought it and got it to a $100 fine with no points.

Remember that if you get points, your insurance goes up.

I'm not so sure about begging the police officer, that seems kinda risky (and stupid to me. I've never pulled that off in court.)

Nowadays I hire the traffic lawyer. Works great.

I second the traffic lawyer opinion. Lawyers lie, it's their job... so your wife doesn't have to.

Tell her to slow the hell down and if she doesn't work you got pwn3d for VTD eh?

Sometimes it can be talked down, unless you're me, then it's entirely possible that you could be fined MORE than the original ticket was written for. YES, that really happened.

My last speeding ticket (2001) was $205 after the court costs.

If you plead not guilty and the judge isn't willing to just reduce it, you end up having a "trial" and then the full legal fine/penalty is assessed. Pleading "Guilty" is also going to get you the full fine/penalty. No Contest is the correct way to plead when seeking a deal.

Also, STR8OUT, your solution sounds like it might work in a little podunk court where you actually have access to the officer before court, but around these parts, the officer comes in the same door as the judge and sits on the sidelines (seperate from the accused) until there is a dispute or discussion regarding one of his cases. Getting there 20 mins before court is in session is like saying "get there 30 minutes after everybody else".
