Default RS tranny into L

I'm thinking of swapping an RS tranny and diff into my '95 Impreza L AWD. The L tranny has about 157K miles on it, while the RS has about 1/3 of that. Are there any gotchas for this? I.e. bolt pattern, clutch, etc.

It's a '98 tranny, so no LSD. Do the rear axles fit, or do they have different left and right parts?

So it mostly comes down to whether it is at all worth it from a performance perspective to go from 3.90 to 4.11?

Thanks,

Martin

Is it a 2.2 or a 1.8?

my 95' 1.8l AWD was already a 4.11 (they switched mid year to 3.90 or something crazy like that) so you may not need to change diffs. I swapped mine cause my L box had toasted synchros and an outback box was available to me at the time.

Im running a 99 Outback 5 speed. which is the same as the RS except with a shorter 5th gear. So in that case the trans bolts right up. The only thing I had to modify was the bracket on the top front of the trans. The case is slightly different so i had to grind down the bracket a bit. Also the pivot for the clutch fork has to be repositioned to the 2nd hole so that it will work with the cable clutch's clutch fork.

Hawk--you are still running a cable clutch? I was under the impression that you would have to switch to hydraulic.

Yep, still running cable. you just have to move the pivot bolt that the clutch fork pivots on. There is already a second pre-drilled and tapped hole for it. Just move that and swap over the old clutch fork.

so my 94 is 4.11....cause my fifth gear calculated to be .962 on a 3.9...but maybe I'm wrong...

Wow, interesting about the 4.11. Mine's a 1.8L, and a fairly early build I believe. I guess I'll have to see if the label is still on the diff or if there's an alternative method to check the gearing aside from counting revolutions or something.

The RS tranny will bolt right up no problem. You might have to work with less bolts than before. Your tranny may have 4 bolts instead of 6 on the RS.

I put in a FWD tranny from a MY93 Leggy into my MY99 L for temp use and I have to use like 3 bolts and 2 nuts. That left me with 3 bolts laying around.

You should look into a MY98 through MAYBE MY03 Outback (Legacy platform) because they run the same gear ratios as the RS except for the 5th gear like what Hawk296 said. Instead of it being .780, it's .871 w/ the 4.111 final drive.

The RS tranny will do because 4th will top out near or a little above 100mph depending on your REDLINE; 6000 or 6200. Who goes that fast anyway....the RS 5th gear will be good for cruising opposed to the Outbacks 5th gear, but you get some power from the higher rpm at the same speed as the RS when you need to pass or something.

This is the tranny code for the MY98 Outback tranny
TY752V2DCA
3.545 - 2.111 - 1.448 - 1.088 - 0.871 - 4.111 final drive
