Anyone?? I want to get one in the next to weeks for vacation, and also just for ****s and giggles. I prefer Sony stuff, but anything you want to reccommend is great, either Hi 8 or digital.
I think I'm gonna get the Sony DCRTRV130 but I'm not sure yet, anyone with experience with it? Thanks guys

Default Camcorder??

Hey 96,
I just recently bought a digital camcorder! It's a Panasonic PV-DV401, great features, nightshot, MiniDV format, still photos, PC software for video and still photo editing included, 3" LCD, color viewfinder, and numerous others!!! Its great very small compact only 1.5lbs, very user friendly, you can check em out at 800.com and other electronics retailers! I wouldn't buy from them though, prices are usually around MSRP! It's a $900 camcorder, I bought it online for $575!! Oh the wonders of the internet!!! lol hahaha

Thanks Joe, how good is the software that comes with it? and are the stills over a megapixel? Thanks for the info, what site did you purchase your camera at? The cheapest I found was 585 at love4digital.com

oh yeah, how long is the warranty for?

I have a Sony Digital8 camera, I think it's the DCR-TRV310 but I won't swear to it. I got it almost a year and a half ago, so it's been replaced by a newer model by now. Mine does not have the little Memory Stick feature, which would be nice to have - I think the newer replacement added that. I can take pictures, it just records them on the tape, but I've never really fiddled with that.

The LCD is nice to have, and I went with the biggest one I could afford. I think mine is 2.5". As nice as the LCD is, I've found that it's pretty much worthless outdoors, even in indirect sunlight. At the track days I've attended, if I want to view the video I have to get in my car or find a really shady spot - even adjusting the LCD brightness all the way in each direction it's difficult to see if I'm out in the open. Indoors it's great, and it certainly makes filming more comfortable.

On a somewhat related note, Sears should price match stuff off the internet. I saved $150 off a $500 Sony stereo receiver by showing them an internet ad. So, if you're a bit wary about some of the online retailers (some of them seem kinda shady to me, but maybe that's just me), get Sears to price match. I know Sears carries the Sony camcorders, so you should be able to find the model you want there.

Bill, did you get my message last night, There's a sweet Sony one on sale at Circuit City that a friend of mine picked up, it's really good too, it has that night feature that you can see through peoples clothes in the day j/k that was only the infra-red kind they took off the market.
He paid $349

I have the Sony DCR-TRV103, I like it, but if I had to do it over again I'd probably spend the extra money on a mini-DV camera. They are so much smaller and lighter. But if weight and size are not important, I would highly reccomend it. I got that model because it was one of the least epensive. All you got when you spent more money was a larger display, which is pretty useless anyway, so I thought that it was the smart buy. If you want a model with excelent color rendition and accuracy look for a model with 3ccd's. These use a seperate CCD for the 3 primary colors and produce the best picture, but they can be pretty expensive.

I would definitely stick with the Digital8 or Mini-DV formats, as you can hook them up to your computer and edit them very easily if you have a Firewire port. Nothing is more boring than sitting through uneditted video, so I always edit things down to make them more interesting. For me, editing is the key issue. If you have a newer Mac, you are all set, because then you have Firewire and iMovie(which is excelent for uncomplicated stuff). If you want to get really into it, get Final Cut pro. Keep in mind, if you are going to edit on your computer you'll need a ton of harddrive space.

Happy shooting

Well, last night I bought a Sony DCRTRV-730, list $999, I just went all out, but I got a good deal so its all good. If anyone is looking for a camcorder, get this one!! It's friggin incredible, this thing can shoot crystal clear videos, megapixel pictures, even mpeg videos, and then it'll make you breakfast in the morning!! Ok, well that last part is a little far fetched , but hands down, this camera kicks major bootay!

I have a Sony DCR-PC100 MiniDV camcorder. At the time I bought it (about a year ago), the PC100 was one of the better consumer MiniDV camcorders that Sony made.

There is a new version of this camcorder, the PC110 that has a built-in flash for taking stills onto a Memory Stick. So you might be able to get a good deal on the PC100 if you can find one in stock.

Etronics lists the PC110 for $1389.
