Say what again!!

Default Tonight on CNN: .50-cal sniper rifles will be the end of us all!

I'm not a gun guru like some OTers (or a gun nut like some other OTers) but c'mon. I absolutely believe that the gun violence attributable to bigass rifles is a tiny drop in the bucket compared to the sum total of gun violence. When was the last time Tyrell and his 'bangers held up the corner shop with a Barrett?

I've got a video of my old roommate and I shooting his BFG50 at a range in MD.

I'll have to dig up the tape.

Only scary thing is the gun has a mile to 2 mile accuracy and if hit no matter where chances are you are dead.

Christ if handled by sniper they can take out a tank....Weak spot betw turrent and base...

hitting someone at 2 miles requires years upon years of training and a spotter, you are practically pointing into the sky at that distance.

PA04STI, I kind of doubt a tank could be taken out by a .50 cal, especially at 2 miles. I think you could disable one by plinking at the optics and sensors, but you're not going to make one blow up.

I wonder if California is going to ban elephant gun rounds like the .577 Nitro Express (and larger!) and such, or if it's just because the .50BMG guns look eeeevviilll!

A .50 will not take out a tank at any distance. Well, maybe a T-62 or T-5x or something, but no modern tank in use today is threatened by a .50 cal.

I had a pick someone emailed from Iraq of an Iraqi taken out by a headshot with a .50 cal. Sick. If hit, you die.

maybe if we painted it pink and put a giant picture of a uterus on the stock it would not scare them so much.

a gun is only as dangerous as the user.

In the military it's technically illegal to take on a "soft target" with a .50cal. .50 "sniper rifles" and machine guns are technically for taking out vehicles and buildings... too bad if there just happens to be some guys standing on the other side...

thats waht they used the Barret in Iraq for, those old russian tanks didn't stand a chance against a .50 BMG with "special" rounds.

the barret is too inaccurate to use against a human mark for a head shot outside of the effective range of a smaller round, and they defenitely wouldn't go for a head shot.

marks are taken out via center of mass and in one shot only, making semi-auto action doing more harm than good, decreasing the accuracy of the weapon.

They had it on TV...A story about snipers and the 50 cal it can take out a tank. Of course they where not using conventional rounds. Not one like the Abrams but they where shooting at a tank and it was penetrating.

Was on a military show.

Definitely will destroy an engine block.
