Default Heating/AC control illumination?

Hi,
Here's a miscellaneous question I couldn't find an answer to in my owner's manual or Haynes service manual...
I have a 97 Legacy Outback, and at some point, the lighting in the controls for heating and air conditioning (vent position, temp., fan power etc.) went out. I ignored it, as I haven't had much time to mess with it, and then it came back on very dimly for a while and again went out. Any idea of how to fix this? I couldn't find any info. about fuses, relays etc. that might associated with these lights.
By the way...anyone know off-hand what the best diameter tubing would be to put over the brake bleeder valve for changing brake fluid?

Pull the dash apart and replace the bulbs- they're a common item to blow out.

Why would all of the bulbs blow at once? (My 95 Legacy has the same problem.)
