Default EJ20G open deck info

Ok some updatage to my last engine post like a year ago.
Closed Deck EJ20Gs
Are the A/B models with HLA heads supposedly 8:5 compression and TD05H. Now for some info you might not have known.
The GC8 codes for early models were as you know GC8AXXXX/GC8EXXXXXX well this is nice to know if you are looking for a closed deck. If you are trying to get a closed deck EJ20G check the model code because there were 2 versions made of the GC8C model. One of course being closed deck and one being the open deck. Yes thats correct OPEN DECK. If you happen to get one that is a closed deck that is out of a GC8C congratulations you officially have a Type RA engine and the heads are not HLA. Again just some info I don't think we had posted and something for you guys looking to stroke an engine might need to know!!!

Happy modding!!

~Mike

My EJ20G came out of a 94 WRX wagon with the VF11. Open deck?

Scooby, I need more information than just EJ20G, I need the model code as in GF8A,B,etc.........to be able to give exact information. I am willing to bet if its out of an early model 94 it is but don't quote me on that!!

No, you might be thinking of scoobyimpreza. My engine was imported by annointed and the swap was done by Rallispec.

lol, im just using noah at cobb as a reference....

he bought a EJ20G for his own car, it came w/ the VF11 on it, and when he opended the engine up it was a closed deck...im just telling u that u have a closed deck engine, thats it.

also those model years(early WRX'S) for some reason the wagons got smaller turbos

HLA= Hydraulic Lash Adjusters. Smaller in diameter to later shim-type buckets so not interchangable. Also about $60ea from the dealer.....if you can find them.

Thanks for the info Duomaxwell.

Im pretty sure that my ej20g closed deck came with HLA heads. I think that every WRX came with these heads...its the verision 1 and 2 STI that i thought came with the non HLA heads.
Rick

I can post pictues of the heads and fully closed deck if anyone needs any refrence

Hey Mike,

What is your information source? Have you seen one of these open deck ej20G blocks? Very interesting.

Yes I came across an extra engine that had a few detrimental problems. We opened it up and bam there it was plain as day. It threw me for a loop so bad that I tore it down and bumped internals with the Subaru Maintenance file. I also used the GC8 owners bible as well to confirm this. The GC8C came in 2 versions open and closed HLA and non HLA. I was under the same belief that all Gs were closed so when I dug around and found otherwise I was quite shocked. Give me 4~5 hours and I will post some pics.

okay i have a question to for you guys.

So I am doing a jdm ej20g swap and this guy who is selling me it, also has a engine managment "chip" which sets the boost to 16psi,no speed cutoff, less turbo lag, and it sets the redline to 8k.But my question is arent the heads only good to 7400rpm then anything after that something will break,pop-off etc? Would it be okay for me to go to go to 8k for a redline? If it was I would only do it for full out racing and not as an enjoyment doing it every second thing.

Help,
Zach

Hey Mike,
Subaru Maintenance file, GC8 owners bible:

What are these and where do you pick them up?

Could these blocks be non JDM spec (Aus or UK?) Dang, I have a '95 WRX motor that sounds like it matches what you describe as the open version. Now I have an itch to open the motor up

if u rev to hight the shims can come out...thats the reason that cobb wont rase the redline on the reflashes..

Naaa man this is a pure JDM spec, the engine came right out the original car it was installed in at the factory. I picked those books up at a Book store here in Japan, they are not hard to find. One of the Hyper Rev mags, I think its Vol number 28 talks about the C having an open deck as well. I did not want this to come off as "everyone that has a C model has an open deck unless its an RA" but it may have come off that way. I just posted it as a heads up to some of our mod happy conversion guys. Anyway I will get up some pics soon!!!

Ok,
Let me clarify some of this information. For the EJ20G, all of the 93 and 94 engines were closed deck through 9/94 (start of MY95). After that only the STi units continued to be closed deck and the regular WRX became open deck. If buying a 95 or 96 clip, you must get the vin to check your engine.

The "other" closed deck EJ20G's, like Noah's and mine, came out of the 1989-94 Legacy RS and 2.0GT's (RS is sedan, GT is wagon). They came with a variety of turbos, but the most common was the vf-10/11. They also had HLA's like the non-Sti WRX's did, but it was a rocker design vs. the direct actuation HLA's. These are actually better heads than early WRX's because they can rev a few 100 rpms higher without floating.

Hey Mike,

Can you hit me with exact titles or ISBN numbers for the owners bible and the maintenance file? I couldn't find anything with a quick search. If you get a free moment, could you throw up a couple scans?

Did this motor you looked at come out of a wagon by chance (220 hp version?)

How does mine map, Model = GC8C48D Engine = EJ20G DW4HE

Thanks,
Rob

Nope out of GC8C48D Engine code EJ20GDW4HE is a third version of the early model WRXs. Its a ver 2 WRX so there is a slight possibility of an open deck.

For the owners bible its made by News Mook News Publishing. For the Maintenance File Search under Jumble books.

The models for closed are EJ20GDW4HJ/5PE. And if I can ever quit forgetting my camera I will post some pics tonight. Sorry about the delay but I forget the stupid thing everytime I head out!!!

Unfortunatlely, I couldn't find anything on those books.

So you are saying there is only a slight chance that mine is not the closed version?

I am totally confused where the open-deck variant comes from now. Here is a list of models/engines I grabbed from http://www.catherineandken.co.uk/sti/wrx.html
Can you indicate which ones you are saying are open-deck? Also, how do you tell between a '95 and a '96 WRX? They seem to have the same model code. Is the build date listed somewhere else?

Hey Mike,

Thanks for the info. I am still confused about what you said about my motor.

"Engine code EJ20GDW4HE is a third version of the early model WRXs. Its a ver 2 WRX so there is a slight possibility of an open deck."

But you say in the list above that it's open... So which is it?

The info I have says it open man but I could be wrong as I have been in the past. By saying its the third version I mean as in car not STi version. You see there was a WRX A WRX B WRX C both the A and B had closed decks the C had open and closed depending on what car it came out of and all of these had the EJ20G. The code you gave me says its an open deck but you will never truely know until you rip it open. Just don't be suprised if it is and I am willing to bet that it is!!!!
