Default How to get some deeper sounds out of my BE?!

Alright ladies and gents. I am a poor college student looking for some relatively cheap upgrades to the engine or exhaust of my 2000 GT Limited.

I'm looking for just something deeper than stock - something that it's obvious has been modified (even though the engine will be stock for a long time). Trying to avoid the raspy mufflers that a lot of people have - we all know what those sound like.

K&N filter is already on the to-do list. If anyone knows a good muffler to use, I'd be extremely happy. Too poor for catback.

Thanks

Oh, and here's a pic if you haven't seen her yet. Basically stock minus the home-cooked clear corners.

The cheapest route seems to be a universal magnaflow/flowmaster/ebay muffler and then have an exhaust shop make it fit. For best sound Borla headers are the way to go. Not a lot of "cheap" options unless you are REALLY patient and keep your eyes open for used stuff.

good luck.

Rip out the muffler and put in a straight pipe. I'm sure the environmentalists meditating in the park won't mind while you do donuts around them.

Top are cheap APC hyperwhites, bottoms are Sylvania Silverstars.

I have the pair of Silverstars (1157) out of my car as I switched to a ricer blue color with the APC bulbs. For sale if you're interested! They are really neat, and have a cool color, but I just didn't want orange anymore (yes they light up orange).

super dumb question, but what all does the custom cat back contain? i'm assuming a new mid pipe (i think its called that), a muffler, and piping to connect? also, what does your exhaust tip look like? i cant find anything that will look good with a bumper with no cut out . i've been thinking about going with a setup like on the current '05s with the duals, but i dont know that it would work. thoughts???

Duals would be really expensive and a waste. A catback is from the cat to the back, meaning a midpipe and an axelback. MIdpipe goes from the cat to literally your rear axel, where an axelback will mate up with it. The axelback has the muffler. I don't think there are really any tips for your bumper, but I could be wrong.

honestly I would avoid the flowmaster, which is what I have on my 88 RX, TWE headers/downpipe 2.5 back no cats and it was raspy and annoying. I blame the flowmaster, so I added a resonator in there and that cut out the raspyness and left only the good sound.

well, here you can NOT really see it.
its a dual-tip muffler that the guy who runs the shop actually picked out (i couldn't decide on one) and i'm very pleased with it. I'll but out the camera tonight and take a shot of the rear bumper so you can see the tip better.
oh, and there is a cut-out in the BE bumper. its just wayyyyyy under there. so much so that no one has even noticed the "single tip" cutout with my dual tip exhaust.
bad photo:

Does your muffler actually come straight out of the rear, or is it angled down slightly? I had had a magnaflow muffler put on my legacy, and the exhaust shop couldn't get the angle right, so it was still angled down, and not straight out. It's hard to tell from your pick if yours is the same way or not.

no it sticks straight out.
they place i went was amazing. I got to hang around in the bay and watch them fab it right in front of me. They held the muffler in differenct locations until i said "thats how i want it"
took them about an hour start > finish.

I'll get a better photo tonight (i promise).

Cool

Or you could just wait around until someone decides to unload a Cobb catback like my brother got.

As earlier promised, here are pics of my exhaust.
yeah, I know its dirty. we just got a few inches last night.
maybe it is pointed down just a tad. might just be the able of the camera, but you get the idea.

Anyone using one of Borla's universal mufflers? The "Turbo" series they show on their website?

I think Subiekid has one on his car. He is turboed now, but I believe he said the one he has is pretty quiet. Either search for the thread on it or PM him.

NICE! took my legacy to the snow a few weeks ago... but it's too low... so i had to tippytoe around. almost got stuck on quite a few occasions.

anyway... my suggestion to make your car louder; borla hedders and stromung exhaust = win.
