Default My weekend project (GT4)

http://www.8complex.com/simulationstation/

Really a cheap project, as long as you've got a welder, grinder, drill, drill press, hacksaw, circular saw, and a conduit bender available. Total construction time is right around 10 hours, give or take. I had a welder malfunction when trying to refeed the wire and had to take apart the entire handle to find out what was up... took a good hour. Other then that, everything went smooth, and I only have minor cuts & burns to show for it! Only one small fire while welding, just a mat I was kneeling on. Please note... my welding skill SUCKS! Don't mind the crappy welds.

Now that I am playing the game with this wheel, I really see what everyone was raving about it for. It offers incredible control, and now being set up properly, it's quite comfortable to use, as well. I'm definitely impressed and I am really not sure if I'll ever be able to play well with a standard controller again.

Oh, and it's still on the slider, so anyone can slide in and adjust the seat to use it.

Damn that's pretty cool. It kind of makes me want to run to the 24hr Home Depot and get the stuff to make my own.

Nice one Nick.

I need to get a race seat for the wagon so I can have an STi GT4 set up.

That's pretty cool. Last time I tried one of those steering/pedal systems It kept slipping all over the place.

How much does it weigh?

Noice. I hope you used FEA so you don't have any catastrophic failiures at the worst possible moment.

I've made a few out a 4x8 sheet of plywood.

Tim - It weighs around 50-60lbs. due to the seat's weight, being an OEM seat and all. The frame itself weighs around 10-15lbs., so a good, light racing seat would bring that down quite a bit.

Calvin - Yeah, I was thinking it looked a bit like a snowmobile. PVC isn't the best of ideas as it needs to be pretty damn sturdy when you're wrenching around on the wheel. Plus the ridigity helps people get up from the seat and whatnot.

All in all it was a really fun project. I wish I could find some real cheap race seats to put together some kind of a universal kit.

Jeg's sells a simple, light seat for around $40. It's a blow molded plastic base/frame with a vynil/foam covering for another $36.

And another $9 for handling, free shipping. Another $30 for a slider to go along with it.

Thats actually not too bad. And I bet I could make it a bolt-together setup without losing rigidity, too. Need some canvas pad covers like we used on bmx bikes back in the day to cover the foam in the rails and it'd be complete.

8: Very nice do you have the 900deg wheel?

Do I smell an "8Complex" racing sim station coming into hand-made LE (Limited Edition) production soon? heheheh

Actually, we were thinking a BMX-style number plate up front, but I bet some posterboard and creativity would work wonders.
