That was some interesting reading. I remember when they didn't measure number of initial quality problems per 100 vehicles but average number of initial quality problem per vehicle. There was a time when averaging 1 return trip to the dealer for a glitch was considered wonderful quality.

I've never had a malfunction of any kind on either of my subarus, so kudos to the recognition.

Not Surprised that BMW is ranked #7. My friend was having his car aligned at West End and one guy with an M3 was having new rear strut tophats installed after the stock ones cracked 6 times.

Something is seriously wrong over at BMW. Take the new M5 for example. It has the follow array of electronic gizmo adjustments:

- 3 engine power and throttle response settings
- 11 (!!!) shifting modes in the SMG tranny
- 2 modes for the stability control
- 3 modes for the electronic damper control

That makes for 198 permutations! Driving shouldn't be that complicated. BMW should change their slogal to "Ultimate Gizmo Machines" since the current crop seem to put driving second behind reading the manuals to figure out how to work everything.

Yeah but The STi has

auto and manual DCCD mode
Manual mode has 6 (guessing) manual settings
has 4 headlight settings

Actual I am leary about moving the headlights a whole lot... doesn't seem like something that would last foever.

they are controlled by a motor behind the assembly. there is a dash mounted switch 3,2,1,0. with 0 being the highest setting (the beam points further up). european vehicles with HIDs have had automatic levelling systems for a while. most japanese hids are stationary. as long as you find a position you're happy with, you should'nt be moving the headlights anyway, or have a further need to move them...

i'm happy for subaru to be ranked at the top. it'll really help the brand with the new outback/legacy/tribeca sales. my wife likes the tribeca, but it may be too expensive... but it does have a flat 6 though

You can adjust the headlights on the STI up or down. BMW, Lexus, and some other high end manufacturers have adaptive HID projector headlights, which turn slightly in direction that you are turning to shine around bends.

The BMWs do have alot of electronic features. Like tailights that shine extra bright when you brake hard or ABS kicks in. The computer can even tell if you are in a serious accident and will put on your emergency blinkers. Features like these are nice, but its just adding to the list of problems that can go wrong.
