Unhappy Had an accident this morning, scratched my rear bumper

Ok, I was backing out of the parking lot... not paying attention.. then there's this guy apparently passing behind me and i didnt see him. I hit his rear bumper with my rear bumper. No big damage, nobody hurt.. good thing. Now, i'm trying to figure out if i should try to just fix the damage on my car by myself or have insurance kick in for it, Its just a bunch of scratches, and chipped paint in the rear bumper. I have a 500-dollar deductible and the way i see it If I let insurance kick in, i pay 500 dollars and my insurance premium goes up. Any advise?? Should I fix the damage myself?? Anybody know how to touch up and smoothen out scratches on bumpers??

The section of this document labelled "Exterior/Interior Trim" contains detailed information about how to repair light damage to bumper covers.

Even if you don't make a claim, they may still raise your rates though because now they are aware of the incident.

I write estimates for an insurance company and if the damages are minimal (i.e., scratches, paint transfer) and the rear cover is repairable it would probably be below your deductible. If they need to replace the cover it would probably be pretty close to the $500.00 mark. In terms of your insurance company, if they already know about the accident it may not matter if you pay out of pocket or have them take care of it. You may want to contact your insurance company and talk to policy services. They would be the best people to tell you how this accident will affect your premium.

best bet is talking you way out of it with the insurance company and paying out of pocket.
