No leak, but oil is missing? Is it burning oil? You may have a headgasket problem. How old is it? How many miles? I'd check your coolant and maybe get a compression test.

Valve guides or piston rings?

If it's going through oil that fast and not dripping it's probably burning it.

Does it ever smoke? On start up? On engine-braking? Hard acelleration?

Is the engine oily on the outside? Could be leaking some too. Clean it off, and you might be able to see where--unless for example it's the rear main seal, which you can't see.

For the front axle, if you don't find out here or on the web (try www.SubaruForester.com too), buy the factory service manual. I think you can download 'em for not too much. It'll be expensive if you buy a hardcopy.

I was thinking compression test but I don't know the spec. coolant or head gasket ouch that would not be good. Starting to think maybe I am missing something under the car as far as oil is concered. as the car has as much power as it ever had.

Check around the front of the motor behind the crank pulley, front crank seals are very common on subarus when they get older, even valve cover gaskets. Usually the oil drips on the exhaust and burns off, that is why you wouldnt see it on the ground.

as far as the axle its pretty easy.

Jack up the car.

remove the 30mm (i htink its 30) hub nut.
remove the roll pin that holds the axle to the trans stub shaft
remove the two strut to knuckle bolts, mark the position of the top bolt at 12'clock (camber adjustment) in order to put it back in the same position. Keep track of the washer on the nut for that bolt it has to be reinstalled on the top bolt.
Pry the axle off the tranny stub shaft.
Hammer the axle out of the hub.

reverse the procedure for installation, make sure you line up the hole in the new axle with the hole in the stub shaft before you push it on, there is a chamfer on the axle roll pin hole that has to lined up with the chamfer on the stub shaft roll pin hole, install a NEW roll pin.

reassmble the rest putting the top camber bolt back in the same position.

get an alignment.

hope that helps. You may or may not have to remove the calipe and tie rod from the knuckle for more clearance to get the axle out.

change pcv. If the air filter is dirty the engine will suck a ton of oil vapor from the pcv and head vents
do checks like mcdade suggested.
Check the under the back of the motor too right where the crossmember is. Run your hand across that. It could also be the rear main seal.

If the bottom of the motor if not oily at all then you want to do a comp. check(not cup check). If that is inconclusive then you should have a leakdown test.

A vacuum guage can also give you some clues. Hook up a good one and tell us exactly what it does during idle both cold and warm.

Any oil in the coolant?

Get started, You've got a subie calling your name.

Oh ya, is it auto or manual? Just for the record.
