Thumbs down Another "I totaled my car" thread

Happened late last night/early this morning. Swerved to miss some deer, got the left side into some slush which whipped it around on me. Went sideways down the embankment, i think - not to clear on what exactly happened, anyway, sideways through 2 sets of docks and on to the frozen lake. Landed on the roof.
Car is destroyed. Im doing ok, few gashes on my head and brusies and cuts from punching out one of the side windows to crawl out of.
In a bit of shock still.

I'll get pics as soon as i can. My camera was in the car and we werent able to find it.

Glad to hear your ok but next time... HIT THE DEER. If you swerve, its your fault the car is messed up and insurance may not cover it. If yours did, awsome. If you hit the deer, then its the deer's fault your car is messed up, not yours and insurance takes care of it. Plus, hitting the deer probobly wouldnt have caused as much damage as the enbankment. Good to see your still postin.

In PA, you have to hit the deer, but like you, my nature reaction is to swerve (happened to me twice) - luckily I haven't lost control (yet).

Very glad you're o.k. and very sorry about the car. Good luck with the insurance.

That sucks. Glad you're ok.
Look on the bright side, at least your car didn't plunge through the ice.
Could have been the "UKScooby died" thread. Have fun car shopping, I guess.

I'm doing ok. Things are aching but I'm ok. Wife is giving me hell though
I told her I could get a new 06, but she's telling me that i cant have a car with this much power again. She told me i must have a civic hybrid
She's not understanding yet that power or speed had nothing to do with it. I was actually a couple mph under the limit due to ice and snow.

Just tell her if your car were faster, you would already have been past the point where the deer jumped out.

no one in their right mind would EVER hit a deer because they are afraid of what else might happen, you did the right thing. if you hit the deer then everyone would be asking why you didn't swerve! it's good that you're alright.

First, I'm saddened to read about your accident. But authorities in areas where deer/elk/moose are plentiful always recommend against swerving to avoid them. Brake hard, maybe yes, but swerve? NO.

Your wife's got the high ground, so to speak, for the moment, but you can't let that last. Is there an AWD hybrid Civic? That's the point you need to keep hammering home. Don't budge on the AWD issue.

BTW, I think the new WRX that'll premier next week at the NY Auto Show is going to be an awesome performer, and much safer than your 2002 WRX. I expect it'll come with side-curtain airbags and I expect it'll set a new standard in side-impact safety for compact cars when the IIHS tests the new Impreza later this year.

Hope you feel better soon and Be Firm about your replacement car.

Idiotic advice.

Better advice from http://www.dps.state.ia.us/deercrashes/:
Quote:
In the event you encounter a deer in your path, "Don't Veer for the Deer." Most deer crash injuries and deaths result when drivers attempt to avoid the animal. This action often results in drivers losing control and colliding with other vehicles. Veering can also cause your vehicle to enter roadside ditches, strike fixed objects or roll over. The best course of action - Brake Firmly, Steer to Maintain Control, and Stop safely within your lane or along the shoulder of the highway.
Same advice from Subaru at:
http://www.drive.subaru.com/Spr04_QuickStops.htm#deer

Thanks for all the kind words.

Couple of questions....

We have gap insurance on this car. We are currently upside down on the loan due to the number of miles I've put on it. So although its a 02 and we've had it only 26 months, its done 76xxx miles.

Does gap insurance cover the car for the life of the loan, or only through the warranty period? We got the 5 year 60K warranty.
We think we are about $3 - 4K upside down, has anyone had gap payout this much to cover the difference?

Or am i totally wrong and does gap only cover the difference of insurance payout to market value?

i just got my rs and opted to take the gap insurance just incase something like this would happen to me, cause i tend to have bad luck, but in doing so i had the same questions! what the dealer told me is that the gap insurance covers the gap between what insurance offers you and what you owe, and it is good on the car for as long as you own it no matter how many miles you put on it!

Insurance payout should be "market value". Gap (as I understand it and as Jenny stated) should cover the difference between that and what you owe on the vehicle.

Great, thanks. Thats one less thing to worry about.
Im fighting both the wifew and her dad on getting a new WRX. They both think i need a small econo box doing 40mpg because of my 810 mile commute per week. I can see their point, but ya know, i bloody earn this money, i should be able to get the car i want, not what her dad wants me to get.
I hate living close to in-laws.

Hopefully i will have pics on monday. Not a straight panel on her

Sorry to hear that man that definately sucks.

I'm on my 2nd subbie now (due to my own lameness) but.... most insurance companies have GAP insurance for people. I didn't even know when my subbie was totalled about 3 weeks ago and I asked and they said "yes, default insurance plans nowa days have gap worked in..."

So you should be set. Sorry to hear about the car though, guess that gives you the option of an '05 huh?

Best of luck.
